Ok so I've been looking for a nice big lake in the area and I think I've found one. Just a few questions though because all I know is what I've seen on Google Earth so far lol. Which btw is how I even found it. I'm wondering though, is there a beach type area anywhere on the lake? Or just a place somewhere that people go swimming?

Using Google Earth to find Troutman, NC, scroll westward until you see this image:

This is the only beach and the only place where public swimming access is allowed.

You can swim in the lake from either a designated beachfront area or from a boat. This website has lots of FAQ's about the lake for visitors:

Thanks for the responses. This lake seems awesome. I assume it's active on the water a lot during 4th of July and Memorial Day weekend. Next step, buy a boat lol

Yes it is. Lots of people go out onto the lake to watch the fireworks at Queens landing etc. I think it would be rather chaotic but not been out there.

The beach at Lake Norman state park is a bit of a let down IMO. The swimming area is cordonned off around maybe 10 ft from the shore and when we were there the water wasn't deep enough to swim in, plus its red clay mud on the bottom so you can imagine.
Best is to swim off a boat dock or boat.

There are also two smaller lakes you can boat on, Mountain Island and Lake Wylie. Park and Rec>Boating (http://www.charmeck.org/Departments/Park+and+Rec/Activities/Outdoors/Boating.htm - broken link)

The lake is very active on Holiday weekends but.. ( and we dont care for big crowds) the lake is so big there is plenty of room for everyone.
If you launch for instance in the Troutman area, ( Stumpy Creek area is one we launch from) it is quieter than the main channels. The main channesl can be chaotic and if you dont have a big boat then you get tossed aroud a lot.
We in paticular have a 22 ft boat and like to find a nice quiet cove to spend the day. Plenty of areas to find to get away from the mass craziness that can go on on holidays or weekends for that matter.
Buy a boat and enjoy it is the best thing we ever did!

We rent pontoon boats a few times a summer and always head right to a quiet cove. It can get rowdy but it's a great lake.
