hmmm...I wasn't aware there is an abundance of Jersey folks in Gaston County OR west Charlotte, lol.

First of all, there is a huge difference between west Charlotte and WEST OF Charlotte, which is the next county over.

Best schools in Charlotte are on the south side.

What is your price range?

According to southbound_295 there is a good amount of transplants in that part of town. He is from South Jersey as well. I'm liking Gastonia. I'm still in progress of researching that area but from what I can tell so far is that it's not far from the city, and has a good elementary school. Gardner Park Elementary. Are you familiar with that school? It shows that it's off of Rt 29/74. What is that particular area known as? Our plan is to rent for a year then buy a home. What kind of area/home would we be able to rent in the range of $800-$1000 a month? Our price range to buy a home would be around the $200,000 range.

I run into primarily South Jersey & Midwestern transplants out here. I hear South Jersey & Philly accents here a lot. A lot of natives who I have talked with in stores mention Midwestern, Philadelphia & South Jersey neighbors.

Also, as the mills were closing in Philly, in the 60s & early 70s, some of the mill workers followed the mills down here & stayed. Therefore you have older people from the Delaware Valley & 2 or 3 generations born & raised here.

The same for folks from Michigan, as furniture plants closed in Grand Rapids.

I know locals here who have worked with or lived near both groups.

John, I'm a she.

You want to look in South Gastonia around these roads for apartments: Union (south of Garrison), Hudson, Robinwood. There's a ton of nice apartment complexes in that area. For houses you want to focus on Hudson,

29/74 is also called Franklin Blvd.

Once you have jobs & are in the apartment you can tell better where you want to buy. West of Charlotte, natives still outnumber transplants, but it's a different mix here.

I will say though, I'll miss a real good hoagie that's for sure lol But being's that there seems to be a lot of South Jersey transplants I'm sure I could find some place that has a decent hoagie.
John, I'm talking west of Charlotte, not West Charlotte, except the airport. That's on the west side.

It's not a bad transition out here.

The hoagie shop in Shelby is passable, if you get the urge. However I usually make my own. I can get decent rolls (Vierra, from North Jersey) & Dietz & Watson at Ingles. Lowes Foods is also a NC chain & they carry some imported bread from NJ.

There are good places for barbeque here. Think of BBQ as the NC version of hoagies.

Well alright I stand corrected lol. I'll check out those area's for places. I guess I would have to get more use to getting to know street names rather then rt. numbers huh? lol But yeah I realize that the locals would always outnumber the transplants. I just like the thought of being around as many in the area as possible. Kinda like Chinatown in Philly for the Chinese ya know lol

I know just what you mean.

I live in Kings Mountain, which is a small town (surrounded by a rural area by the same name)10 miles west of Gastonia. I run back & forth between Gastonia & Shelby, which is about 10 miles west of here.

West of Charlotte is not as built up, so you get more bang for the buck on real estate.

John - please be aware that there are tons of people from NJ in all parts of the Charlotte region. You're free to move to wherever you want but be aware the "West of Charlotte" area you're referring to is rather remote and you might miss out on a lot of the reasons people move to "Charlotte" to begin with.
