We are stunned, yes STUNNED!! Here the weekend daytime temps have been in the upper 80's to 90 and we still don't see that many boats on Lake Norman. By looking at websites about Charlotte, we got the idea that there would be lots and lots of boats on Lake Norman right now, but sure haven't seen that.
We talked to one employee of a Dry Storage building by a Marina and he told us that at least half of the boats in this large building probably wouldn't even go on the water this summer. However, he did say that at least 2/3 of the boats in the building would go out on the 4th of July.
We know that part of the problem is the gas price, but that wouldn't stop us if we had a nice boat (like we seen in the Dry Storage building and docked behind some homes on the lake).
We are just wondering what has happened? Shoot, at one of the Reserviors we went to in Colorado (28 miles south/southwest of Denver), there were so many boats wanting to get on the water at noon, there was either a long line to "launch" or the Park Rangers had to close the parking lot (it being full to capacity).
One thing is for sure, we sure used the boat we had in Colorado.......going out every weekend unless it was too windy or rainy.
So, what's up with boating on Lake Norman??

Well we bought our first boat two weeks ago and took it out for the first time last weekend. Saturday afternoon (after the rain) and Sunday were packed on the lake, especially the south part where we keep our boat. I think the weather forecast kept people away this weekend. Saturday turned out to be perfect and it was quiet out there. It was nice at our marina, there was not a wait to get our boat or dock it up. The gas docks were empty too. I would guess that once school is out, the action will pick up. I love having a boat and cannot wait to spend my first summer on the lake.

I'm assuming because school is still in and gas prices play a small role. But I was on the lake last weekend and it was a freakin zoo out there.

Wilk23, what kinda boat did you go with? details? We just looked at a Four Winns 220SS last week too.

I'd say the high price of marine fuel is keeping people off the lake.

Bought a 24' Leisure Pontoon with Yamaha F115 from County Corner in Mooresville. My wife really wanted the pontoon, so I bit as long as it had the bigger motor.

I do not care about the gas. It will cost us about $115 to fillup, but that will last us two or three weekends. If I was not on the boat, I would easily spend that and more shopping at the mall or something. To me, I am going to save money and get to hang out on the lake.

I tend to agree with Barkingowl.
We went out for a quick spin on Saturday evening... we were also surprised how quiet the lake was. And again yesterday later afternoon. On our little cove, it was smooth as glass!
Let everyone stay home... I like it this way.

Yep, Sunday and Monday last week was a zoo! We just stayed in a cove all day and had a blast cooking out on the boat, and wake skating behind the jet ski.

I agree with others, wait til June when schools out, but gas will still be a factor. We're not talking about a slight sticker shock of $3.00 a gallon like we've saw a couple years ago, we're talking almost $5.00 per gallon and it's only gonna get worse!

Well, we will wait and see just how full the lake can get with boats. So far though, we just haven't seen that many boats on this lake. If (and when) we do get another boat, we can only go out on the weekends. Fortunately for us, we like to be on the water between 8 and 9 in the morning.....yea, we are an "early to bed, early to rise" older couple at 60 yrs old.
We also read that this lake is a "year-around" boating lake. How true is that. We mean, we just don't know how anyone would want to be on a boat when the daytime temp high was 45 degrees in November!!! Brrrrrrrrrr!!

Um, yeah, In November you'll find me snug as a bug in my nice warm heated home, not on the lake, lol!
Most boats are winterized during that period.
