Can anyone tell me what the closet Military Base is to Charlottesville? Can be Army, Airforce, Marines or Navy. We are retired Navy so I can deal with anyone. I just need an active base. I need to take care of a few things and trying to figure out what bases is close. I know there is FT Belvoir that is about 2 hours away and FT Lee that I think is 1 1/2 hours away. Is there anything closer? Thanks.

I looked at a website re Fort A.P. Hill and this is what it said:

Nearest commissaries and exchanges are 40 minutes away at Dahlgren-Navy and Quantico-Marines.

I realize that Fort A.P. Hill is not really near Charlottesville.

I suspect that Fort Lee is your best bet for nearness.
Mapquest says that Dahlgren is 2 hours & 4 minuts from C-Ville.

Thank you for your help. I think FT Lee will be easier to go to then Hampton Roads.

Ft. Lee is definitely easier to get to than Hampton Roads.

Belvoir? The one in arlington? Belvoir is about 80-100 miles away, depending on route.

Ft. Belvoir isn't in Arlington. It is south. If anything it would be considered Alexandria (the very southern part).

About 2.5-3 hours from Charlottesville.

Default Military bases near Charlottesville

The two closest bases are Quantico and Ft. Lee, which is east of Richmond. Speaking as an Army guy I can say Ft. Lee is bigger but notoriously bad within Army circles. We're moving there next year and my wife plans to go to Quantico for commissary shopping etc. About an hour away, supposedly.

Ft. Lee is the closest but the post itself leaves much to be desired. If I only had enough time for a commissary run I would go there. I have been to that commissary before and they have a decent selection of items but the PX is awful.

If you are looking for a commissary and PX/BX/NEX I would make the drive to Quantico- much nicer base. Ft Belvior is OK but traffic has been terrible lately due to the construction.

Did you also know that there is a traveling commissary? I saw it on the Web hosting, domain name registration and web services by 1&1 Internet (http://www.militarydutystation.com - broken link) website. They were at NGIC on Aug. 13-14, 2010. I am not sure how often the make it to Charlottesville Va but I think I would go anytime just to support it and keep it coming.
