I am a young professional and opportunity is limited there. My family still live there and really struggle to survive as responsible hardworking people. I have seen poverty in the western part of the state that resembles third world conditions. So many backroads with trailer parks and people who can not find a job with medical insurance.

Shadowbat, I have not been to Albarmarle, I want to check it out when I visit home again. I am always wondering if there is a city anywhere (not in NOVA) that is promising for young single professionals....haven't found anything yet.

I'd look out in the Fluvanna/Louisa county areas too. Lake Monticello is nice and has a good community feel (and good farmer's markets nearby in both Palmyra as well as Scottsville) and is only 20 minutes to the new Martha Jefferson Hospital on Pantops that will open in August. That might work for your husband's job.
