Hello
We are currently looking for a house (thinking Earlysville) and was wondering which high school is better - Albemarle or West Albemarle?

Also any info on Broadus Wood Elementary School or Jouett Middle School?

It seems that everyone talks about Meriwether Lewis and Murray schools but are they really better??? OR is it that those homes are in the "better" part of town?

Thanks! and ANY info on Earlysville is appreciated.

Hi there. I don't know a thing about the local schools here, although I get the impression that Western Albemarle is superior. But take that with a grain of salt. As far as Earlysville goes. It is not a town, or evan a village really. There's a country store where roads cross/fork and some closer built houses. But no real town feel. The Albemarle Regional airport is right there and it's close to Hollymeade Town Center for shopping and dining. Hope that helps a bit.

FWIW, Western Albemarle ranked #247 on Newsweek's America's Best High Schools, 2011, the only Albemarle County high school to make the list.

I grew up here, so maybe I can help. Broadus wood and Hollymead are both decent schools. Class sizes are rather large, but they do a good job for public school. We send our daughter to the Charlottesville Catholic School, which has much smaller class sizes (15:1 vs 28:1) and a great track record (even if you're not catholic). Still though, I wouldn't hesitate to send a kid to BW or Hollymead. I went to hollymead myself, although that was 20-25 years ago...

Default Thank you very much everyone!

Thank you very much everyone for the info! We are disappointed in the high real estate prices around Charlottesville - so currently looking farther out. Not sure how far out we need to go....

Pretty far. Crozet (20 min west) is the hot new place, and some mediocre deals. Lake Monticello (30 min east) is ok too. Waynesboro (30 min. west) has decent prices, and has been built up a lot over the last few years. It does involve a commute over Afton Mountain though (which is really pretty easy). I did it for a year without any problem. I find West of town better due to lower traffic...North is the worst traffic, and highly overrated IMO.
