Hi,
My partner and I are thinking of relocating to the Charlottesville area. Does anyone know about the availability of art teacher jobs in the Charlottesville schools or Albemarle County. I have a VA art teacher's license. I am also a registered art therapist and have worked with children with emotional disabilities.
Thank You!

You may have stiff competition here. There is a great big university in town pumping out brand new teachers every May. My kids have had great teachers at all levels in Charlottesville. Best of luck!

I'm hoping that 14 years of experience in Fairfax County working in regular education classes and in small classes for children with emotional disabilities (and an ATR) will help. But I'm not sure how those systems handle their special education programs yet.

I would think that would be very valuable here. Also, there is the Oakland School nearby in Keswick.

My wife is a teacher across the mountain (local slang for across Afton Mountain to the west of Charlottesville) and had no trouble at all finding a job when she starting looking down here last March-April.

She sent an email to literally every principal in every county in the area and based on that found a number of leads that ultimately lead to offers.

Something you might consider is passing the PRAXIS for Special Ed since you have some background in that and teaching general Special Ed for a year to open doors to art teacher positions. This will make it much easier for you to find a position.
