So I read a Quora post where the writer said that he made his best financial decision by "buying the worst house in the best neighborhood."

He looked in a neighborhood that was way too expensive for him, found a run-down house, fixed it up, and was very happy living there 19 years.

That made me wonder -- what is the "best neighborhood" in C-ville? If you could buy a house at about half the going rate in ANY neighborhood in town, where would it be?

There is no 'half the going rate' in Cville - even tiny fixers will run you a quarter of a million.

North Downtown is good too. Some good bargains in Belmont, quite a few under 200, but the area varies block by block.

When was that area built? Is it the best for its location or something else?

I lived in Forest Lakes for 3 years. It has a great location somewhat away from the center of the city. It is very quiet and safe. It has the best schools for elementary to Junior High School. The schools are actually part of the development. There is a good variety of housing. From townhouses to very large homes. It is expensive though but I believe one may be able to find a deal like mentioned in the first post. Of course my answer to your question is based on my opinion. It may not be the best for everyone. I do not know how the widening of route 29 has effected commutes to UVA and the downtown area. I lived there 6 years ago or so. Hollymeade is also a good development which is a little less expensive and sits between Forest Lakes South and Forest Lakes North. There are 2 pools and lots of tennis courts. It is very popular among UVA professors and the Military professionals in the area. I am not sure when it was developed but maybe Zillow can offer insight there. I hope this helps.

Expensive relative to wages? Or just plain expensive like NoVa, where a SFH in the lowest tiered schools will run 400K.

I guess there is a good range of housing prices in Forest Lakes. I will take back my statement about it being expensive. I guess for me at the time it looked expensive. Now I am little better off and see the houses are looking more affordable. My house was was 3500 square feet in Forest Lakes South and cost $460,000. It depends I guess on your needs and budget. I would look at it to see how it fits your needs. I will tell you it is a very nice development. It looks like Ryan homes has some new homes coming in at the mid $300,00's. I have no idea where this neighborhood would be. There is a good variety of neighborhoods, townhouses and detached houses. mod edit: RE listings not allowed .

I saw the new homes...big houses on small lots in an hoa...nice, but it looks like you would have to drive to do anything. I want a walk score above 70.
