no offense but IMHO why would anyone want to retire IN VA?
people work/live in this area because it's a great place as far as work is concerned....but why wouldn't you want to retire on a tropical, warm, beachy place instead?
(i'm sure the cost factors in...but still...)

There are only a handful of employers; a lot of them which used to be here have pulled out. Everyone who writes about Charlottesville says Richmond is less than an hour away and northern Virginia is 2.5 hours away; but no one from Richmond or NOVA every refers to how far away Charlottesville is. Yes, because of UVA and the associated UVA Medical Center there are well educated professionals here. But every city has educated people. I already have two college degrees, so I don't spend any time at UVA. Sure, I enjoy the Blue Ridge Mountains and the associated outdoor activities, but I wouldn't say that is "culture". What makes Charlottesville so cultured?
the art shows, the UVA/paramount/other live music that surrounds this area. Photography is also huge in this area....We do ice hockey a lot, and most of the folks from NOVA/MD/VA rather come here so they can make a weekend out of it....whole fall issues of Southern Living dedicate themsleves to 2 hour trips, with Cville on the front..

I spent 34 years in NOVA/FFX county and still go up often for CAPS games and/or family....it takes so long to get to any of those places that are "exciting" its not worth it.

Every weekend there are mucho activities to do....fairs, wineries, plays etc.....I can't do 1/3 of what I'd like to do...and yea once a year we go over to Richmond for some shopping....

Also - I don't think you can touch the rest's per capita that Cville offers....
