I am currently looking for a place to live in Charlottesville for a July/August move. I've been there a bunch of times, but I'm not really sure which areas are decent areas to live in as far as safety is concerned. I know there are a couple of shady areas. I am looking at a place on Essex Road. Anybody familiar with this area? Is this a decent area? Also, does anybody know of nice areas close to the University or downtown? I know most of the questionable areas are down that way. Are there specific spots in those areas that are decent? Any info anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Go here and do a search for the last 6 months. That should give you an idea of what the crime stats are like.

Don't be too shocked, and remember there are a lot of college age people that can cause all sorts of "problems" that aren't necessarily all that serious.

I am not too exclusively familiar with that neighborhood, but have always gotten the impression that they were nice and I would be surprised if there were any problems in there.
