Um, no. No high crime (unless you live in certain neighborhoods, which are pretty easy to spot and avoid), no crazy unemployment (the state's is 10%, but Chattanooga is doing pretty well), no abandon houses that are creating drug zones to my knowledge. Chattanooga is a wonderful, Southern city. We live in Harrison and rented in Hixson a year before that (suburbs of Chattanooga). We have had no problems whatsoever. Lovely, lovely place.

I think others will eventually respond and give you their take. If you have any other questions, you can search the Chattanooga forum for "crime", "drugs", "unemployment", etc. and see if that helps answer questions or ease your mind. Also, if you have any other questions, be sure to ask. We're a slow bunch to answer, but we will get there.

Compared to Detroit, I'd imagine Chattanooga will be a huge breath of fresh air for you. With that said, there is of course some crime/gangs, drugs, and unemployment here--no city is immune. And you will see some of it in the slummier areas (mainly south/southeast of the city). But there is definitely a lot of good happenings and healthy culture here, and jobs are to be had. I think you'll be satisfied.

Chattanooga's also a lot smaller than Detroit, too. But quickly growing.

We just moved from Wisconsin 2 months ago. We love it here. Obviously just like any city there are some rough parts you will want to avoid but overall its wonderful. I have been to Detroit many times and trust me it is nothing like that. We have nothing but good things to say about Chattanooga.

We live in Ooltewah which would be considered a suburb of Chattanooga. Its about a 20 minute ride downtown.

We moved here from Orlando in 2006..We love it here...Chattanooga not near as big, but we like it better here...My husband would never move back to FL...We live in the Brainerd area, historic, close to 24, close to 75, close to downtown...All homes are different in this area...I have heard from locals that new homes are not as well constructed here as the older ones...Do your homework online...We wanted something different than we had in FL...the cookie cutter house in the cookie cutter neighborhood...

My family relocated to Ooltewah in January and we love love love it! It is far different from Detroit!!! There is so much to do and very family friendly. It's big enough to have everything you need with out being TOO big! I am so happy we are here.

There was an article recently in the paper showing that Chattanooga rated #1 in the country for growth so there's lots of opportunities here.

Good luck!
