I'm moving to Chattanooga from New York City. I'm viewing a place in Highland Park in a few days. It's on Duncan, west of Willow by a couple blocks. (I'll be working near UTC and want to live nearby.) According to old threads, I guess that's in the nicer part of the neighborhood?

Attitudes about HP seem to be mixed, and a woman at my new job says that HP is a "little rough" and that she wouldn't live there. I'm wondering whether I will be safe. I am a single woman in my 30s.

I've been living in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in NYC for the last 10 years, so my idea of "rough" may be different than some people's.

If anyone has any other info to offer about HP, that would be great.

I simply do not believe that you have been living in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in NYC for the past few years. That makes absolutely no sense at all... Most of those folks do not have the ways or means to get out of those neighborhoods much less to a University job in Tennessee...

That being said I would compare highland park to williamsburg, parts of queens, etc. Not dangerous on a day to day basis but crime happens and you may become a victim. Clear your car out, get a security system, etc. If you honestly lived in Flatbush, Morris Heights, Endenwald or a similar NYC hood well then you will feel safe.

I don't mind going that way during the day, but no way would I live there. It's still too new in the transition phase or revitalization.

Highland Park has great spots and some that still need work. It's on a street by street basis. One street could be nice, but the houses on the next street over may be crime infested. You would have to visit and walk the neighborhood and see how safe you feel. Knock on doors, talk to the neighbors, the mail carrier and the police to see what the area is like. You may also want to rent there for a year or so first to see if you like it or feel safe there. You should also check out Fort Wood, which is a much nicer neighborhood right next to UTC, and where I live.
