Hi, it looks like I'm going to be accepting a job in Chattanooga, and I'm wondering what are some good neighborhoods to live in.

I'm 24, and I would like to be close to downtown. I'm trying to spend around $700 or less. 1-2 bedrooms (I have a lot of clothes). I've heard North Chatt is a great area, but I don't see too many listings there on Craigslist. I don't want to surround myself with college students, but I do like to go out for some drinks every now and then. Oh, and safety is always an important factor

I'd appreciate any and all advice. Even numbers of landlords would be great!

Welcome to Chattanooga. North Chattanooga, The Southside (37408) and Downtown Chattanooga are your best bet BUT $700 / mo is going to be pretty tough. The rental market here is BOOMING. Great time to be a landlord (which I owned a bunch of rentals).

You're best bet would be to live in the Red Bank/ Mtn Creek area (37405). It is what most people do who can't afford such a heafty rent price tag. You will get alot more bang for your buck and still be closer than any other area to downtown. Try the Mtn Creek apts. Very safe, nice big complex. Knew several people who lived there. Closest complex to downtown that is affordable.
good luck

Thank you all so much! I've just sent emails to those rental properties. Susannah, I keep seeing this Mountain Creek complex. Exactly how close is it to downtown? And what would traffic be like in that area? Thank you again for your help!

Mtn Creek is 5 or 6 miles from downtown. For now the traffic is a little backed up because of the interstate construction and school zone traffic. But only if you are driving in at prime time 745AM. Otherwise is a breeze.

I used to live at Mountain Creek Apartments and loved it there. The only problem is not enough closet space. There are several apartments up and down Mountain Creek Road that are safe and you're 5-10 minutes away from downtown. Apartment rent around Red Bank/Mountain Creek Rd area is cheaper and you'll end up with a larger place. Have you checked on Craigslist for possible roommates in the northshore area? There are some nice houses around there for rent, but it helps to have a roommate or two to share the cost. Good luck!
