Where NOT to look for an apt in the Chattanooga area (Red Bank: apartments, rentals)

Hi All,

I will be coming to the Chattanooga area the first week of April to apartment hunt and get a feel for the area. It is myself and my teenage son. Based on previous discussions, people have recommended North Chattanooga as a place to look. I will be working in two locations Brainerd and Hixson, so somewhere in the general vicinity would be great....not sure how close those are to downtown, but someplace where downtown is easily accessible would be good, I don't mind a 20 minute drive to get wherever I need to go. I guess I'm wondering what areas I should avoid? Are there certain neighborhhods where a single female or a teenage boy would NOT be able to walk safely? My son's and my safety are my biggest priority.

Hixson and Brainerd both cover large areas so it will be hard to 'generalize' about those communities in whole. However, as you might expect, there are pockets of more- (and less-) desirable neighborhoods in both. You did not specify exactly where in Hixson and Brainerd you will be working but, more than likely, you're going to be using Hwy. 153 to commute between the two locations. As a matter of convenience/economics, if it were me, I'd focus on rentals along your travel corridor. Personally, I'd start on the Hixson side and see what you find. Once you narrow down your choices, get back on the blog here and ask for info/details about those specific areas.

I recommend the Mountain Creek Road area as a possibility. Several apartments on this road and safe. I see both females and males out running on Mountain Creek Road by themselves. I lived in Mountain Creek Apartments when I first moved here and had no problem. You're within 10 minutes from the northshore/downtown area, about 15 minutes from Hixson, and 15-20 minutes from Brainerd. The apartments are more affordable and have more space than many of the downtown/northshore apartments. There are several apartments in the Red Bank area, but are not as safe as the ones that I mentioned. You could check out houses for rent in the Northshore area which is between Hixson and downtown, but they're usually pricey and not very big. Good luck in your search.
