My family and I moved to Chattanooga in the mid-2000's from Upstate SC. Lived on Missionary Ridge for about 2 years - due to unforeseen circumstances, we had to move away (actually back to the Upstate - we now live very close to downtown Greenville, SC).

We loved Chattanooga and greatly miss it. Of all Southeast cities, Chattanooga has the most aesthetic appeal (with the exception of perhaps Asheville). Chattanooga's mountainous backdrop and river front are amazing.

My wife is from Greensboro and we know the Triad area well - I love the Piedmont areas of North and South Carolina - of course, the topography is very different than Chattanooga - however, I think I prefer living east of Apps as winter weather is more "interesting" LOL (CAD/"Wedge" weather never affect Chattanooga).

You are probably well aware of the pro's of Chattanooga: mountainous/varied terrain, no state income taxes, no ad-valorem/yearly auto taxes, and tons of family activities (aquarium, children's museum, bike trails, etc).
Some cons (my view only): lack of some well-known retail: no Trader Joe's, REI, Macy's, Pottery Barn/Williams-Sonoma, Apple Store, Total Wine (no wine sold in grocery stores - hated this), & no Bruegger's Bagels! (both Greenville SC/Triad have all these retail offerings)//I'd also miss Mast General & Kilwins in downtown Greenville.

If you haven't already, your family needs to go to Lupi's - fantastic pizza and I can't find any pizza to match it in the Upstate.

If your children will (or do) attend public school (and unless things have changed drastically), I highly recommend you look into Signal Mountain (my opinion only).
drfranklin - I see you are in Greenville, SC but loved in Chattanooga. These are the two cities we are very highly considering and split between. We've been laser focused on Greenville for some time, but have recently become interested in Chattanooga too. I am curious why you prefer Chattanooga (or so it seems from your post). Would love to hear your pro's and con's for each. We are a family with very young kids. Thanks!

I was very interested in your response as we too are looking to move to the Chattanooga area. We live in Charlotte with a home in the NC mountains as well. Our main goal is to move to mountain/lake/river area full time and get rid of the other two homes due to raising elementary/going on junior high kids who ride horses and play tennis and want good schools. Is there equestrian riding and junior tennis in the area? Thanks for any input.

We do not have children so cannot really answer....You can certainly find riding in the area. Our realtor has horses and she lives in Ooltewah. You might look there. A water area would be the Soddy Daisy area but around 25 miles from downtown. Good schools???? I know that is a joke in Nooga unless you are in Signal Mountain. You would really need to do your own research on the towns with better schools. Good luck and maybe send me a direct email to brooklyngirlbags@comcast.net. Closing on the home on Friday!!! Can't believe we are leaving NJ after 31 years....
