So back to Mi Jacal in Kimball...has anyone been since I started this thread? Also heard that there was another Mexican restaurant just opened in Jasper. Haven't been, any reports? I think it is called Las Margaritas??

That would be great! Sounds like a good place for a huge Sunday lunch that we can nap off later

I had a really good Mexican Lunch buffet today for only $6.99. It's next to the new Publix on East Brainerd Rd. The food and service were both excellent and the place was spotless. There is also one downtown on Broad st., but I haven't been to that one yet.

La Altena on Main Street was our favorite Mexican restaurant when we lived in Chattanooga. Made to order gaucamole, excellent chunky salsa (with lots of cilantro), and authentic mexican entrees. Downsides: the place is a "hole in the wall" (numerous torn booths) and service is spotty when it's busy.
The Times Free Press had a recent (very positive) review:
FYI Weekend | Mouthwatering fare from south of border at La Altena
Even though we now live in a larger city, we cannot find a mexican restaurant to match the quality of La Altena.

The one in east Brainerd is clean inside and appears to be in great shape. You can't beat the all-you-can eat lunch buffet (Thurs. thru Sunday) for $6.99 per person. Excellent service at this location by an all-male waitstaff.

Husband's friend drug us to another one of his 'finds' this past weekend. We love his company and he actually is an excellent cook, but his taste in restaurants is always a test of the tastebuds. We loooove good Mexican food, chile rellenos, enchiladas, carne asada, mole (molay), homemade guacamole - at this restaurant? Not. What we got was something interesting which we've never had even in Mexico. Carne asada with an interesting twist: Ground sirloin mixed with chopped beef?? Asked for "con queso" and got "fresca" (sour cream), they had no queso cheese; no guac', got avocado wedges, and here's the topper, they instead sprinkled them with -- parmesan cheese Heavy cilantro, chopped onion, no pico de gallo or salsa What on earth?
Took it home, didnt want to offend the host - doctored it up ate it while watching Alvin & the Chipmunks (not bad while you are already laughing).

I usually drop from memory the name of places where I ate bad food or details about people who give me a bad taste -- this one gave me both. We'll see our loving captor tomorrow and I'll casually ask ...
We have a very dear friend who went on this fat-free spree and made a fat-free cheesecake that tasted like caulking. I called her "lady" for awhile. Its a glitch in my DNA I guess.
