Moving from Raleigh, NC to Chattanooga

I think housing would be your biggest concern, moreso than fitting in. That's because there are areas of Chattanooga that are every bit as liberal as anywhere I've lived/visited/worked. I work with several engineers who live on the northshore around Mississippi Ave. Plus, I'm told Missionary Ridge also has lots of UTC faculty members of a more liberal persuasion. St. Elmo would be also, but I can't vouch for the schools. I know that Normal Park is well known as a top public school. The north shore is zoned for NP.

Are there apartments in St. Elmo? Is the UT Chatanooga area a good area to move to?

I would advise against Highland Park because even though it has come a long way there is still much needed to make it safe and comfortable. If you are interested in buying I would highly recommend the Southside area; specifically Jefferson Heights and the Cowart Place area. It doesn't sound like this may apply to you, however the city is currently trying to lure artists to these areas and is offering incentives to do so.
