East Ridge has lower taxes than both Chattanooga and Hixson, but you will have to deal with some traffic noise from the interstate if you move within several blocks of the expressways. Some streets are nicer than others, so you really have to drive around and get a feel for the area. The residents are really nice and will talk to you and answer question if you happen to catch them outside their homes. Good luck.

Good points u41cmusic. I am within 5 blocks of the interstate and in direct flight path for the airport. After 8 years, the traffic noise is not really an issue anymore and we have gotten used to the planes. It was weird but after 9/11 I actually missed the planes and their noise. They had become another part of our lives. Just don't nap while the Thunderbirds are here and your friends will get used to you putting them on hold while you are outside and a plane is overhead

That was some really great info, and we'll be using it during our explorations after we move in. I'm so excited, and hope it is all we have hoped for.

I'm sure its been reiterated many times already, but there are plenty of good places to live in the Chattanooga area. However, it should be said, that if you want to live on a decent piece of land in Hamilton County, you are going to have to pay for it in the long run. The county commission seems to be intent on using the landowners as their main source of income, in order to spruce up the downtown area. I've lived in Hamilton County for 25 years, and I finally had enough and moved to Bradley County. I'm 25 mins from downtown, I have a houses on a mini-farm for less than the land would have cost almost anywhere in Hamilton Co., and I save about $6000 a year in property taxes and utilities. Oh yeah, and traffic is wonderful compared to Hixson/ East Brainerd. I love Hamilton County, but its not worth the price you have to pay to live there.
