I'm moving my family to Chattanooga for a position at the U of Tenn. We want to be within walking/biking distance of the University, if possible. I have kids in elementary, middle, and high school and we're very selective about the schools our kids will attend. What's the best school district in the area and is it close to the University?

i would definitely not send your kids to public schools in chattanooga. they are awful. i was told that chattanooga has more public schools than any other city its size... pretty bad. GPS is a good all girls school and McCallie is an all boys school. Also, you have baylor and notre dame which are great schools as well. If you want a public school, i would look into hixson or red bank.

All the below areas (hixon, red bank etc) are part of the same public school system. There are a lot of private schools and parochial schools. There are also public schools that are good. One just needs to find them. The biggest problem is the underfunding of the schools by the county/school board. The new schools that are being built need private funding to make it a school. The county supplies the physical facilities and the educational items need to be funded seperately. Areas to look at are Signal Mt., East Brainard and people will tell you about other areas they feel strongly about.
