Hello all! We will finally be moving down on the 14th!! I was wondering if anyone has any experience with transporting pets and can offer any advice or suggestions. The full trip is about 12 hours, I was thinking of stopping at a hotel half way thru to give them a break, and pick up the trip the next day!? We have a small dog and 2 cats! This should be very interesting!

I guess you could say I've had some experience transporting pets....when we moved from MI to NC besides the 3 kids and my ex-husband and I, we had: a cocker spaniel, 3 cats, a garter snake and a cockatiel spread between 2 vehicles. It was about an 11 to 11 1/2 hour drive and we went straight thru. I think it would have been harder on the animals and us to stop at a hotel for the night and then have to get up and drive again. The cats were in two different carriers and of course the snake and bird were also caged. The dog was actually the most trouble, because he wanted out of the car every time we stopped for anything. Everyone arrived safe and sound. This time, we'll only have 2 cats to move with us to TN.

our vet gave us a sedative for the cat. We broke the pill in half, and gave him half at the start of the trip, drove about 6 hours, checked into hotel and gave him the other half the next morning.

He did just fine!

I'd tend to agree with the sentiment here, at least with my pets. They are always on edge at the beginning of the trip and eventually settle down once we are on the road for awhile.

I'd do my best to drive it straight through, though 12 hours is a long haul even for us humans! Congrats and good luck!

Congrats on the move! Some animals are better travelers than others. Some take it in stride like our cockatiel used to and others like my cat needed a little help with a sedative. We had a 12 hour drive here and we stopped overnight because of our 3-year old and I think it was harder on the cat. He wandered around the hotel room, got a little comfortable and then we packed him up again...He looked like he wanted to kill us! We were cracking jokes at the hotel room about what he was thinking as he wandered around the little room. "They packed me up and moved me for this place? This bites!"

My folks moved/drove from OR in an '87 Prelude (teensy) with a 70lb pooch and 2 cats. Let's just say that drugs were involved... all the way around LOL kidding! The cats did get some kitty valium and didn't complain at all. Personally, I would drive straight through with a couple of potty breaks. You guys will be just fine

That's funny. When our kids were smaller and we would take the long car drives, my wife would always say, "They need to get out and stretch their legs, walk around a little" . They had their head phones on and playing video games, they could care less about walking around. I figured out pretty quick, who it was getting cagey on these long drives...

I've moved with cats probably 10 times and will be moving with 2 cats to Chattanooga in a few weeks. Here is what I have found..Keep each cat in their own carrier. Mine always started out a little upset with some meowing in the beginning but they settled in after about 1/2 hour and were fine. I always stayed in a motel when the drive was over 12 hours. The cats could always "hold it" until they had a chance to get to a litter box.

HOWEVER...This is very important..If you do stop somewhere (and I wouldn't bother if the drive is 12 hours or less)..please,please be careful with the pets in a motel room. They can shoot out the open door in a heartbeat and, since they will be in totally unfamiliar surroundings, there would be a good chance they would simple run.

Your pets will be ok, they actually feel safer in the carrier throughout the trip because everything else will be so strange to them (moving car, etc).
