8/20/2008 - TVA Board Approves 20% Rate Increase - Breaking News - Chattanoogan.com

As if the gas price wasn't hitting us here's another budget cruncher:

" Saying that cost pressures were stretching its resources, the TVA Board today approved a 2009 budget that includes a 20 percent rate increase.

The budget includes $12.613 billion to cover operating expenses and $2.088 billion in capital investments.

Officials said the price of TVA electricity will increase "in order to cover increased fuel costs and related expenses. The factors are forcing a total average increase of 20 percent in wholesale power rates effective Oct. 1"...

While amounts will vary across the Tennessee Valley, consumers will see an average increase of $12 to $15 per 1,000 kilowatt-hours. "

EEK!

Where I work, we are looking at this increase as possibly costing "us" over $1,000,000 dollars!

Default interesting

Interesting timing . . . it comes right on the heels of the 20% rate hike for Tennessee Water.

Time to put a solar panel on the roof I suppose.

We'llb e replacing our standard light bulbs with flourescent of LED bulbs too. The rates are only going to keep going up and you're right, that's not good.

TVA is EPB - Yes? If that's the case, I already dislike that utility company so much they couldnt do one more thing that would make me dislike them more. Don't get me started ... TVA's ugly cousin is San Diego Gas & Electric (SDGE) in Cali. I have a Gone With the Wind type of story when we had just moved here, involving hair dye in my hair, power out, no hair dryer, curlers or anything, ripping a old skirt I had to use as a scarf and marching down to EPB to have a little chat with them. Wait, that wasn't the thread was it? Sorry. Yes, we'll be changing the type of bulbs we use.

Not just how this impacts the end user. But specially these days, consider small businesses in the area that currently JUSTT about make it each month - Through a 20% increase on their power bills in and see them go down the drain.....

Your bill is $300? Our second bill was a little over that. Turned out they were doing an 'estimate' and not an actual reading. Bill dropped by half after the re-read. Friends and neighbors told us to have them do a re-read because that didn't sound quite right. Maybe check with neighbors and see if that's the usual for houses in your neighborhood? If so, I feel your pain.

SDGE was never our friend. We have another story with SDGE and our 17 year old diabetic cat's insulin, shortly after 911, husband goes down to the office waving the vile in the air wrapped in a ice pack due to no power - insulin going bad. Whatever you can imagine happened in that scenario, cannot even possibly meet the reality. Wait, maybe I got a little transferrence here ... oh, well
