There's been only one couple who actually kept their HGTV Dream Home (the one in Tyler TX), but it's currently up for sale for $4million.

Lots of IRS taxes.. ??
Only time will tell the overall situation. Article sounds like $250 from HGTV and another $250 from other discounted bldg goods. I remember being at the Chattanooga home show and one of the poured concrete foundation co was using the show advertisement in their Booth.!
If a COUPLE lives in a home for 2 years almost no IRS gain to declare. If property in the name of the single young adult designer and now he owes IRS on the full Million being he paid almost nothing, that will be a big bill. Guess they should really consult accountant ..??
Maybe it is in the business construction name and profits offset other losses.": Who knows, only time will tell if smart move, or pound foolish.
The 1st Survivor tv show winner of the Million $ prize Richard Hatch eventually went to prison over IRS refusal cause he claimed he earned the money OUTSIDE USA.?

Well, essentially, he's correct that he earned it outside of the US - but, with the IRS being the Nazi system that it is, you can't fight it. They have their own 'secret court system'. In other words, NO MORE IRS - Whoever is next President, I'm hoping that he strikes down the 16th amendment, and gets rid of the IRS. I'm for the Fair Tax.
blessings, Shen *didn't mean to get into an anti-IRS rant, sorry folk!

Well, for what my opinion is worth.....I truly felt badly for both Kelli and James while watching the final episode this last Sunday as it ended with both of them putting a "for sale" sign just one month after completion of the home. Then, I started thinking about it and realized that nothing about this house made any sense. Take for example, daddy (the builder) has to have some intelligence to have his own construction company and why on earth would he not educate his daughter (regardless of the family ties) that she and James would not be able to afford a house of this magnitude. Also, he stated that this was the only time he went way over budget....fishy again. Then, we keep seeing clips of the father saying, "yeah, we are over budget but then it is all worth it to see this view........" Then, you see Kelli and James nonchalantly discussing their finances and that there will be no more money for the house. That was the catch phrase throughout the whole show, "there isn't going to be any more money." But, what concerned me is that this didn't seem to bother them. Now, either they are just complete idiots and ignorant or there was something more to it. Buying a home, in general, is an emotional experience and one of the biggest purchases a person will ever make in their lives; therefore, I just have a hard time believing that if they ever had any intention of residing in that home, there would have been more emotions shown on the show. I don't think it was a matter that they were stupid and just thought that money grows on trees. If Kelli is a social worker, she would've had to obtained her masters degree if she is licensed and she had to have some brains to get through. So, my point is that I truly do not believe that they ever had the intention of living in that home, regardless of what was written in the newspaper article about the whole situation. And, come on let's be honest.......in the last episode, you hear Kelli clearly state that she wasn't even sure if she would be able to afford gas money for her car because of the home and then at the end of the show, you hear the commentary person state that Kelli and James put their house up for sale because they could not afford the $3,500 mortgage payment. But, then you have a different story in the newspaper article where Kelli states they could afford the mortgage but would have to live a different lifestyle. But, she also stated in the last episode that she and James didn't want to work just to pay the mortgage, which translates into that they could not afford the home, period. With everything combined, i.e. taxes, mortgage insurance, mortgage payment, heating and electric, there is no way they could afford that home. So, here is my theory: I believe they built this home with the intention of boosting her father's business by utilizing HGTV and stating this was their dream home to boost James' acting career (if any of you watched all of the shows there was an episode where they showed James in a play and he loved to act) and so they could sell it for almost twice what they actually paid in building supplies, etc., so that James and Kelli could buy a home and have an extremely low mortgage payment or not one at all.......If any of you saw the ending, Kelli stated they would be splitting the proceeds of the house three ways.....And, of course BR would take time out of his busy schedule to be on t.v., hello ppl, it is free advertising via the HGTV network....I don't care what the newspaper article says that he wouldn't have done this if his daughter really wasn't planning on living in the house....okay, then, why did they only live in it one month aftewards? All of it just does not add up.....Plus, BR had his son helping him with the other building projects---if you noticed, Kelli's brother was rarely on the show.....And, what a better way than to have pappa build the house free of labor charges and to have free publicity for his own business. And, if James is into acting like he portrays, what a better way to get into the business than be on an HGTV reality based t.v. show and to make a hefty profit in the end after selling it? I truly believe my theory could be valid, especially after reading the newspaper write-up and how much they were protesting that they could afford the home, when in all reality they couldn't and that it was never intended as a spec home (per James) meaning their original plan was to reside in the home and not sell it......We all know what ppl really mean when "thou protests too much...."

Prior HGTV- Batchlor actors.??
D: What a long post. I thought you were going to mention prior HGTV shows / actors.? that went on to the Batchlor show as proof. The current mcee also did some House Hunter episodes, and one time the customer appeared to be ALEX which was the 1st Batchlor.
Only time will give more details, but anything high profile will have a IRS trail. Like the prior congress man who had military co contracts, then SOLD his house to someone(?) for about three times going market value, and more records show buyer was one of the military companies he awarded bid contract to..!! Busted..!!

dayoh - you make alot of sense. That does sound extremely logical to what happened. They were very casual every time they mentioned they were over budget. Daddy would even laugh and joke about it. They were building a large home, tho, to be able to adopt several children - soooooo, maybe that's still their plans, just not as ambitious and fancy home as that one is. I missed the episode about James wanting to be an actor. I guess they're hoping he'll become another HGTV emcee.
I've never watched 'The Batchelor', so you could very well be correct in that. The only person I recognized from another network is Kendra, year before last winner of Donald Trump's 'The Apprentice' - she's shown up on a few eastern seaboard HGTV shows, as an emcee. She's still with Trump, but I guess he doesn't pay enough, so she's moonlighting?? Or this is just another Trump endeavor?? I know that she already ran a multimillion dollar real estate firm in Florida before become Trumps Apprentice, so, just jumping over to host a real estate show for HGTV was a natural outgrowth of her career.
That's another thing that bugs me about The Apprentice. All these people are highly successful multimillionaires already in their own business, owning their own businesses - why on earth would you even want to put yourself under someone else's thumb as an employee, and lose your independence????
Enough...

Thanks for saying that, Shen. My wife enters those contests and I'm terrified that we might win. It would be like the mess some of those people got into after being given a new car on the Oprah Show, only exponentially worse.
