the point about catholics is they arent as judgemental.... they have their beliefs.... but anyone whos been in the church of God would know they r the worst most jugemental a-holes to ever call themselves christians, so anythings would be a step up from that. lol.

Well, that is why I said it is rather misunderstood and people will think I am crazy saying "try Catholic" hahahhahaha. That birth control ban thing is not true. They do accept gay and lesbian and any other walk of life. We have a few gay couples in our church, people from about every nation too. They don't "force" men into priesthood, which is an acceptance of celibacy, it is a choice.
No, I don't believe EVERY rule, but these things have never been forced on me, I have never been forced to give a certain amount of my income or money to be a part of the church. Never been judged and I was a divorced single mom for a long time and am now remarried to a non Catholic. No judging.
It may not work for everyone sure. But the OP was asking for a less judgmental Christian place for them to go to church, I just gave my suggestion.

Desmarian, the problem with most people is that they actually give a hoot about what others think of them! I was brought up in an irish catholic neighboorhood in boston and it doesn,t get any more catholic than that ! went to church was an alterboy and the whole bit , the things I saw some folks do in the name of god you wouldn,t believe! I don,t care what any religious group thinks of me or my way of living, unless of coarse they want to start paying my bills and then I may think about it. I have some questions though, what area of chattanooga do you reside in? and have you ever actually lived in a blighted neighborhod ?

Speaking as an ex-Catholic, a vast majority of the parishoners do not hold those intolerant beliefs. However, the pope still does and I left because I didn't want to teach my children doctrine I did not believe.

In the search for a more socially liberal church my husband and I did attend a UU service and it was......unsettling. I realize there are different attitudes in different congregations, but I felt so uncomfortable sitting in church and hearing the minister talk about evolution and there was even references to evolution in the hymns.

Keep looking. Back home I joined an AOG church and although down here they can be kind of scary, mine was the most friendly, accepting and loving church I've ever attended. I'm still hoping to find something like that in TN.

You might be able to find a progressive Disciples of Christ church in your area. Their churches vary from place to place, but in TN, for the most part, they are fairly moderate.

I live in Ridgeside, which is an enclave of nice homes but that is within walking distance to what you are probably alluding to as urban blight. The house I lived in before this, which we resided in for 7 years, was in a heavily integrated area in a larger city. So please, don't preach to me.

In fact, this quote is from u4ICMusic and is in regard to the neighborhood in which I live.

It's a really nice nieghborhood, but It's surrounded by slums and nearby low income housing. I hope you have a neighborhood watch group being so close to such bad elements.

People come to this board for assistance and tips. To go off on someone's religion, I don't care which one it is, is inappropriate.

Dasmarian, I am not a racist, but I don't want to live in slums, or close to them. You choose to, and that is entirely your choice. I don't care if they are black slums, white slums or spanish slums. I refuse to live near them and that my dear, is my choice. I did not go off on anyone's religion. As a former Catholic myself, I have every right to state "my opinion" on the religion. And, please don't give me that "hate the sin, but love the sinner crap." That is just more hatred being spewed from the pope and the Catholic church and causes violence and hate crimes against gays and lesbians. Your religion is your choice, being gay is not. Personally, I think the pope is a complete joke and could care less what he or any Catholics think.

There was not one racist comment in any or my statements. How you choose to interpret them is your problem, not mine. My complaint about Fort lauderdale were the illegal immigrants, not the color of their skin or where they came from. My tax dollars were supporting their medical care and food stamps and I was tired of living in a run-down neighborhood that was actually beautiful when we moved there in 2000. This forum is not a church, so please don't preach to me. If you like East Lake Park so much, why don't you sell your wonderful house in your lilly-white neighborhood and more to East Lake Park. It's a safe bet to say that you wouldn't do that, and neither would most people on this forum looking for a nice neighborhood to live in.

And your right, people do come here for assistance and that is exactly what I gave them. You just didn't like what I had to say.

mbmouse, I don't know of any other religion that requires celibacy in order to serve God. Catholic priests and nuns are the only ones bound by this rule that I am aware of. I don't think it's fair to choose between serving God and being celibate. I think one should be able to serve God and make their own decision about having sex or getting married. I don't think pastors from other religions that allow marriage do a lesser job than Catholic priests do. And I don't see why a woman can't become a Catholic priest if she so chooses. However, that's another archaic rule that the pope and the Catholics refuse to change.

The Knights of Columbus have given nearly 1.3 million dollars to ban gay marriage in California. making the Catholic fraternal organization the largest single contributor to Yes on 8, the proposition that would ban gay marriage in California.

Wow, that really looks like the Catholics want to treat homosexuals fairly doesn't it. And that's only the donation from the Knights of Columbus, many more $$$ were also given by the Catholic church to try and pass this proposition. Gay marriage does not affect heterosexual marriages at all, and it does not affect the Catholic church at all. They just don't want equal rights under the law for something they don't agree with.

u4icmusic,
I understand your dislike for the catholic denomination and so does everyone else here. However this is not the place to debate it. Not to be insulting, but I do not care to debate my or your religion with you even if this was the place.
The OP asked for a LESS judgmental, MORE liberal than the Church of God area he is in. I just gave my opinion as an alternative for him to explore. You can agree with it or not, that is up to you. He can take or leave my opinion, that is up to him. However this is not a debate forum for you to attack everyone else's answers. Do you have a suggestion that fits what the OP was asking about? If so, why not offer it instead of attacking others that have offered opinions.
Thank you.
