Apartment websites?
Hi, All,
I'm considering a movie to Chattanooga a few months from now and am looking at housing. I want to rent an apartment and have two questions:
1) Any good neighborhoods for a single 30-something gal who likes artsy, walkable/bikeable, and historic? I've searched these boards pretty extensively and North Shore looks lovely but also expensive. Are there any slightly cheaper alternatives?
2) Are there any big apartment websites that have good info on the area? I've tried apartments.com and they're a bit short on Chatt info. Also tried RCPM but lots of folks here say the service is lousy.
Thank you! I'm excited to check out your lovely city!

What are you looking to spend? Do you have pets?
You aren't going to find anything like downtown, except in downtown. But there are some other areas that are nice that you might like. Around Hamilton Place, on Gunbarrel there are tons of apartments and stores. The traffic is murder though, but it depends on what you are use to.

Re: price, well--I'm trying to figure out what the range is there. What would $500-700/month get me? (I'm assuming NOT a place in North Shore?)
No pets right now. I've considered getting some tiny critters (guinea pigs, probably--I'm allergic to most everything that's bigger) but that's not a must-have for me.
Scarlett, can you tell me what "murderous traffic" means? Right now I live in a major metro area and have a "short" commute of about 35 minutes. Not horrible, but not my favorite thing, either. I am looking at a job at UTC, and am not sure what the traffic is like in/out of there, or how good the public transport is.
Thanks, all!

You can find something nice for 600-700 in North Chatt. That area can be difficult to find a place in because they don't advertise and the only way is to drive around and look for "For Rent" signs. I don't think I can post the numbers here, but I can send you a message with the numbers of a few places I checked out. None of them accepted pets or I would have considered them.
Hmmm, murderous traffic....I meant that pretty literally. I go over to that side of town once every month or two for stuff I can't get where I live. Every time I go, I avoid getting hit, rammed into or sideswiped at least once. People can't drive for s**t here. I went today and saw two accidents involving ambulances in the space of 10 minutes. Last time I went, a lady ran a red light at 50 mph and almost hit me. I have a low opinion of the driving skills here though, perhaps someone else can offer their opinion.

Yikes, sounds like fun times driving on the north side! I fear there are crummy drivers everywhere, though. We certainly have our share here. I live in a very drought-stricken area of the Deep South and every time it so much as sprinkles, people go nuts with the accidents. It's like they've never heard of slowing down.
Do apt complexes in that area not advertise because they don't have to? That seems unusual to me.

Hi there....ScarlettHurricane was referring to the East Brainerd area, when referring to murderous traffic. It is highly conjested over there and when I go on that side of town, I am reminded of the larger cities I have lived in (Ft. Lauderdale and Los Angeles).
North of the river is not nearly as bad and the drivers are much more courteous than South Florida, that's for sure. We live in Hixson and except for Hwy 153 during rush hour, it is not bad. I think you can find a place in N. Chatt for 500-700 for one person. Like SH said, a lot of people do not advertise. Have you checked Craigslist. Times Free Press, and the Chattanoogan?
Best to you in making your decision.

craigslist: chattanooga classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events
For apartments I'd go with Craigslist over one of those big apartment websites any day. And with $500-$700 a month, you can find a nice apartment on any side of town, I promise. Heck, In chattanooga you could live downtown on that.
