This may be a stupid question BUT...
...I can't seem to decide on relocating to Lynchburg, VA or Chattanooga, TN. I'm a middle-aged (but young looking, sounding and thinking!) Caucasian, Christian, political conservative. Plus, right now I don't drive or own a car so, at least for the time being I need public transportation.
Comments? Thoughts? Ideas? Anything?

I don't know about the public transportation in Lynchburg, but I'm sure the bus sytem in Chattanooga runs only in the city limits.

Have you visited either place? I was one of those who viewed your thread yesterday. I didn't reply as I have never visited either place you asked about. Why Chatt? Why not Knoxville?
Relocating is a big move and expensive, that being said, I don't think it is a wise financial decision to relocate to a whole new place based on some strangers opinions.Only you can know if a place feels right to you, someone can't make your mind up for you. We don't know what stores you are looking for, what cultural events or any of your likes or dislikes. All we know is you need public transit. Once you find a place that has public transit, you need to define what else you are looking for.

Hey...my husband and I visited Chattanooga last month and fell in love with it. We were able to take the bus, free, from one end of town to the other. I don't know if it runs on weekends, but it's real easy to get across town, getting off or on whenever you want. We are seriously considering relocating there after the first of the year. You sound a lot like us...we are just retired though. Good luck!

I'm not going to make my decision based on other people's opinions. I would just appreciate other's opinions. I know more about Chatt than Knoxville.
And I didn't just say I needed public transit. I wrote that I'm middle-aged, Caucasian, Christian and political Conservative! So, I wrote a bit about myself. I don't need nor want a great deal of "cultural events" other than I like outdoor festivals and I want a place with basically friendly people (and, hopefully, a place I can find a decent church). AND...a place where the rents aren't unafforable.
I'm now living in the Boston, MA area and I hate it! People are NOT friendly, rents are NOT affordable. I can't find a decent church. And even though there are tons of "cultural events" I don't care. I've had my fill of them (and night life) from my years of living in NYC and Los Angeles when I was younger.
Enough info about me and what I might want?

Okay...my opinion, when I visited there last month, was that it seemed like a safe place, and at no time while we were downtown, did we feel 'unsafe'. We too are caucasian, christian and very conservative! Since we were only visiting, we don't know anything for sure...but the city appeared to be clean and the people were friendly! I too, would be concerned about finding a good bible based church. Since TN is in the bible belt, I'm sure there is a church there for us!
We also visited Hixson which is just north of Chattanooga, and it's beautiful up there too. Everywhere we went, people were friendly and helpful. We are really hoping that we will be able to move there. Even though we were there a short time we were very impressed! I'm sure you will hear from others who actually live in Chattanooga...just give them a little time to respond...again, good luck!

Life's Good in East TN
I moved to Chattanooga from OK 15 years ago. I was on vacation and just fell in love with this area. I lived in the Hixson/Soddy Daisy area until 5 years ago. My husband and I bought 3 acres of land on Flat Top Mtn in Sequatchie County. Dunlap is the county seat and has about 5,000 people. Nice rural community with a golf course. Your right, the people are all extremely nice and polite. Most people still say Good Morning when you pass them on the street.
It is convenient for my job also. It requires flying quite often, so I am able to catch reasonable flights out of Chattanooga or there is always the shuttle van that runs every hour from ATL airport or Nashville (BNA) airport.
TN sales tax is a little steep (around 9%) but no state income tax.

God bless you!! Thanks for writing and giving me a good "feel" of the place. That's what I wanted. I hope you can move there, too. Maybe we can become friends!!
