Southern Pool, is it cool?
Alright locals, I know we had a few days off with the cold, but let's think spring! Funny since we just snow shoed across the lake last weekend!
My question has to do with swimming pools in the south. We are leaning toward the Signal Mountain area for our future move. I know it has a community pool. The Mrs thinks it would be a hoot to have our own pool. The thought is we "up norters" will be swimming in February cause we think 60 degrees is sweltering! Is pool ownership a economic drag? Is it alot of work? Does the Signal Mt community pool get much use? Is it open the usual Memorial day-labor day schedule? Can you provide some insight?

Pool re-sale .?
F.T.: Yes low 50's here today . Just ran chainsaw clearing trails . Maybe 63 degrees Fri.
. Have not used that town pool, but saw it at the fall craft fair "HodgePodge". . When we went to Fla Real estate agent said look for a resale ,as never get the full $20k return to dig a inground model .
May see quite a few Above ground here . Also newer lap , or resistance swim models , so ask around.
Plan "B" , tell the Mrs also a HOOT to go to all the Tarzen ropes in the gorges with a six pack & go Skinny dippin ........

Swimming pools can be a pain to maintain. Once you get your collection of miscellaneous chemicals, you'll get used to it and it shouldn't be a big deal after a while. It will just be another chore to add on like anything else. Pools cannot be dug in many areas due to too much mountain rock so you might have to end up with an above pool.

I can't speak for the SM pool, but other community pools are very popular. We are members of the Y and the outdoor pool is closed due to cracking, so we can use the Red Bank pool and it was always crowded this summer. Also, many neighborhoods have pools in the burbs and they are popular too. Some people have their own pools, but I think many use community pools.

Tundra,
I think you will make it there before I do. You may want to live there before doing the pool thing. We lived in Florida for awhile and found that you do adjust to the weather, just think if we had a 40 degree day in Wis. right now how warm it would seem anyways, the pool we had in FL saw little use after Sept. the days were short and it was in a shady area so the water was to cold to swim in. Some friends close by at the time had some type of solar panel to heat the pool so they got more use out of it.
I had to laugh at my cousin who lives near Chattanoga, he was draining his hot tub for the winter as he thought it cost to much to run and it did not get used in the winter because it was cold down there.

I'd have to agree with Stone1, Tundra. We live in Florida and we do not use our pool in the winter. It is too cold to us. We have an aunt who comes down from Pittsburgh every few years, and she will use our pool in March when it is still too cold for us. I would agree that you adjust to the temperature of your area. To our aunt, the temperature is fine!

A collective thanks to all of the insights of such a distinguished list of posters. Your advice is appreciated! I never thought of the rocky soil and adjusting to the temps once we establish ourselves. Good points to ponder.
