My husband has an opportunity to transfer with his employer to Cleveland, TN but I was just looking at the City-Data info on Cleveland on this site and I noticed that the crime index is pretty high for a smaller city like this.

http://www.city-data.com/city/Cleveland-Tennessee.html

Cleveland looks like a nice city. Can anyone clue me in on my the crime index is so high? I know that sometimes these things can be skewed by certain data, i.e. if there was a domestic violence crime (which can happen anywhere) that lead to two murders, etc.

Thanks!

Hi,

I asked that question some time back and the answer basically came back; drugs, including meth labs.

I know it is a problem in most rural areas but why is it higher in Cleveland than in similar areas around Chattanooga?

Is it lack of police will, numbers, other problems, payoffs or what?

I like the area and keep looking at it as a potential home, but this concerns me as well.

davidafan, ( and leonard)

If you dig deep into the City-Data crime index my guess is that you will come to the conclusion I have. It is total BS. I have research two like sized cities for comparison and found these numbers... a city with 73 murders in 2007 has a lower rate than a city that has 12 murders in 2007. 57 rapes verses 53 rapes. Robberies are only place the numbers make sense with 324 in one city and 358 in another. 73 murder place has a crime index of 619. 358 robbery place has an index of 780.
After finding this glaring error in the crime indexes, I pretty much discount all of them. I have spent some time in Cleveland for work. Three separate times in fact. I would say that it is a rather safe place... according to Bulldawgfan's crime index. Good luck with your move.

My husbands company is relocating to the Chatonooga area, looking for homes in the general vivinity, Cleveland came up with several along with Dunlap, Hixson, among others. I have found that there are negative comments on all of these towns. Seems drugs (meth labs) being the #1 source of crime. But start loking at dates when these articles are posted. There is crime everywhere & in this ecomony it probably will get worse....EVERYWHERE! I presently live in York, PA rarely locked doors, mainly oversite, but never worried. My house was robbed a few years back by someone we knew broke in window, doors were unlocked. We recovered items & still forget to lock doors, feel safe. Point to make, it can happen ANYWHERE!
