I'm recently retired and have been looking at the Chattanooga area for some time. I've read all the posts here and planning a visit; but would appreciate it if there are any local residents who might please give some advise.

What 2 or 3 area's in greater Chattanooga are best suited for an active senior?

As I'm single I'm looking at an apartment or home rental situation. I'm also looking to do volunteer work.

I enjoy culture, arts, baseball and fishing. Have a dog and cat. Kids all raised and gone. Not concerned with schools. Traffic not a real problem for me as I'm use to it in So. Ca. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I don't have any advise for you but we are also moving down and I have an Aunt and Uncle that are retiring and moving down around the same time as us so I am looking into these kind of questions for them too. Looking forward to hearing peoples replys (I think I spelled that wrong??). Thanks!

Cool Outdoor & INdoor Volunteer

R.A.S> : We have moved to this county two years ago from out of state so can offer positive direction . Spouse does Indoor volunteer one day a wseek at the city Aquarium. Very educational, lots of benefits.
...OUtdoor groups can be the Gorge Trust, patroling lands, brush clearing, river clean up, etc. . The cumberland hiking trail build is somewhat more physical, cutting trees , building bridges UP on the Plateau. Work during the week with out of state volunteers, spring break college students, etc. Both groups have websites to search.
.. NOt to mention church groups to volunteer. This region has strong family values & active parishes . For example our church is on older 55 acre farm , so still has all tractors/ barns for up keep of landscaping, grass field cutting.
... Fishing is really on the North side of the city, from the DAM on rt #153 north to various coves / creeks at the Hamilton county line. . Can fish the river west towards Jasper , but sort of narrow & stronger current in my opinion. Quite a few weekend tournaments at county park , "Chester Frost" north of Hixon . Even have weigh in stage built with stands.
...West side of river has Nice Divided hwy Route #27. East side is Interstate #75 Major tractor truck traffic to Atlanta , Ga. South side has I-24 with afternoon tie ups / bottle-necks towards Nashville.
...Feel free to Private Message -E-mail me , upper right of this screen if any outdoor / sports questions. Fully retired, NO business connections/ sales.
.. This area is quite nice and has lots to offer adult residents.

Sounds like you may want to find a place near or downtown - close to the arts, baseball stadium and so much more. Lots of places to volunteer as well.

I agree with Tridad...I'd check out downtown...such as the southside neighborhoods (Jefferson Heights, Fort Negley, Cowart Place- really cool/hip/artsy), Highland Park (where I live- melting pot of bohemians, artists, yuppies, doctors, etc), and North Chatt.
