Blue Cross just laid off nearly 200 people downtown. Make sure his job is secure before moving here, as the job marker is not good. Your best bet is E. Brainerd. Try Mountain Shadows. It's an excellent community wity a pool and a close knit association.

Tridad is right. If you haven't visited here extensively, like I did before I moved here, it is best to rent for up to a year to really find the location that works best for you.

I agree...I grew up in Chattanooga and have lived all over. I say rent first and see what you like. My favorite area was North Chattanooga but that was when I was single and enjoyed the frequent late night neighborhood parties.

I agree in an ideal world I would rent whenever moving somewhere new, but with a 6 year old who will struggle with a move anyway, I'm not sure it's wisest for our family to rent in one school district and consider moving to another school the following year. Has anybody with school aged kids done the renting before buying thing, thus putting their kids in 3 different schools in 3 years?

they will get over it (this coming from a kid who got transferred to 12 different school districts from K-12, four different high schools in 4 different states - 3 my junior year)

Your bank account may struggle too with multiple buy/sells if you don't choose right the first time.

Just my opinion - no one knows your kiddies like you do so do what you think is best. Here's a thought...move here at the end of the school year and stay in a short-term rental as you scour the neighborhoods to buy a house before the end of the summer.
