You're right; a good education does start at home.

I'm sure that for many families the whole McCallie/Baylor/GPS thing is a status issue, but that's beside the point. The education really is much better, at least in my experience. I spent a year at a public high school in Chattanooga, didn't like it, moved to a small private school for two years, got a decent education there, and then because of extenuating circumstances had to move schools and chose McCallie. McCallie takes the bag for the best education.

Well, "McCallie takes the bag" only if you're male! GPS takes the other bag! as my daughter went there & it was a great educational experience!

Too bad the $$$ is going to become more and more of a burden for families that desire the experience but can't do the financials. I actually think it will hurt the well rounded quality of academia there.

So, with all that said, in terms of public schools, I wouldn't choose Hixson or Ooltewah....I'd go with Signal Mtn for a small town feel with good schools.

Ooltewah... that's the area that will see the greatest property appreciation in the area over the next five years. Ooltewah HS is recognized as better than Hixson HS too. I'd stay away from Signal if you have to go to/from downtown Chattanooga or anywhere east of there. Just last month, they had a rockslide that blocked a huge portion of the main route down.

The difference between the two is that Hixson is more in the action and Ooltewah is pretty far out from town. Thye both have decent schools (I teach at Red Bank High now) but subbed last year and they seemed simular to me (and actually fairly diverse).
