Good tips DR except you left out a very important one, especially for someone who doesn't work on AC systems: wear safety goggles when doing any AC inspection and repair. Refrigerant can do irreversible damage to your eyes and can also burn your skin.

Good advice. Saving money on repairs is the idea but paying out 10 times more for an injury blows the whole thing. Be careful. read and understand all safety cautions and wear those safety glasses.

Safety goggles! Of course!

Guess I was just thinking about popping the hood and taking a look around. No harm in that. Safety goggles/gloves would be a must before actually working on the system!

Thanks for the reminders!

Had a little experience with this about a decade ago with an old truck I had. I think nearly every fitting o-ring was cracked and needed to be replaced, as well as a couple of the rubber hoses, and the refrigerant filler valve. I did all the work myself in my garage and took it up to pep-boys and they filled it up for me. I think the total in parts was about $75 and the refrigerant fill-up was $100. No leaks and blew cold air until I eventually sold it.

I don't see or hear the clutch on my A/C compressor kick in when turned on. This is a 1997 Chevy Blazer.

Look at your receipts from the previous work or call your previous mechanic and ask what was done !!!

Could be:

blown fuse
psi switch bad/unhooked
low refrigerant psi

That's the switch mounted on the accumulator (the silver tank the big hose - the suction side - runs to). If this switch is ever suspected, you can take a paper clip and "jump" the terminals on the connector, and the compressor will kick on.

Sounds like the OP does have a leak, though.
I jumped across and it did run BUT my a.c. stayed warm........ never got cool so where do I go now?
