No matter how you cut it the new Camaro was a mistake. Ugly and cheap looking. Bad idea.
Exactly. I still remember the days about a decade ago when everyone would compare the Mustang Cobra to the Camaro SS. Back then it was a a good comparison. Since then, the Mustang has gotten better and better while the Camaro is getting worse. They almost cannot be compared anymore.
I think the Camaro looks too much like a transformer. Aside from bumblebee actually being a camaro, there's something about the big front grill with square slots and almost menacing looking sharp angles just makes it seem like something too futuristic, almost like a robot. There are other people that may like that in a car, and I don't hold it against them. I just think the Mustang wears "retro-futurism" a bit better and found the interior to be much better than the Camaro's.
Plus 305hp + 31 MPG highway doesn't hurt. I'm kinda looking forward to see what Chevy comes up with for 2011 production.
I cannot understand all the hatred of the new Camaro. My friend just bought a new one with the V6 and six speed manual for $27,000. He let me drive it. The only thing I did not like about it was the visibility. My Escort has MUCH better visibility, especially out the rear. Otherwise, I thought it drove really nice and it had good acceleration and handling, at least to me. Needless to say, I hated having to drive my Escort afterwords.
I think if I were to buy a new GM vehicle (which probably won't happen for obvious reasons), it would have to be about the only thing I'd start to consider since it's at least a V8 RWD car with 400 hp on tap and avaliable in a manual trans. (well there is the Corvette but that's a whole different ball of wax) So at least there's a little spark of excitement.
However I also think the car was poorly designed all the way around. The car is supposed to be a reincarnation of a 1969 Camaro. What Camaro built in the 35 year time span even had those funky tail lamps? That's right: NONE. And it just really makes the car look really bad. Like finding a dog turd in your Chips Ahoy bag.
I also think GM should have bettered itself power wise against the Mustang. The Camaro has almost always had more power to offer than the Mustang, yet they decide to release only a 400 + hp engine whereas the Mustang offers more from the factory if so ordered at the show room. Hhhmm what's up with that GM? Does Uncle Obama have you on a leash?
I also think the Camaro should be put on more of a diet instead of being a heavyweight contender. C'mon GM get your head out of your ass. If you're going to only offer a 400 hp V8 at least build the car to not exceed 3500 lbs curb! We all know power to weight is key here.
And those window openings need to be a bit taller. How else is anyone other than a midget suppose to get in the silly thing w/o bonking your head? Hey if I wanted a chop topped car I'd visit the local custom shop.
Another issue is that nose. Man fix that nose. Especially the lower valence panel. Looks like a 1978 Camaro that was sent head first into a brick wall. Was the guy who designed this drunk on duty that day and the approving authorities high on paint fumes?
And don't even get me started on the dash layout. The gauges look like someone on acid tried to recreate the 1968 Camaro dash and was hallucinating that a square was a circle, while listing to White Rabbit on a tube AM radio.
And those are just a few of my thoughts on the 2010 Camaro.
Make them look more like this above and smooth out the lines some, and put it on a diet while offering more power than the Mustang while keeping it affordable....and you might have a winner....oh yeah and make sure there's something sturdier other than a 7.5 rear too.
Ive had a 1995 (3.4) and 1999 SS (modified, had a BLAST). I would buy the new Mustang and Challenger over the Camaro right now. I don't care for the design. Just me, I can't tell a difference between the V6, Z, or SS. That was one thing I liked about the 98-02 models. I haven't driven any of the three so I'm just basing it on appearances.

I have been wondering the same thing. How the hell they came up with the rearend design, I don't know. Other than the rearend, the car looks alright to me.
A friend of mine just bought a black SS, white SS stripes and a damn auto. Wish he would have gotten the 6-speed. Still waiting for him to pick me up so I can drive it.
Exterior not bad....Love it in black...And I could do without the hockey sticks. It's the interior that reeks of cheapness! A friend of ours recently bought one. His biggest complaint is he was looking for a muscle car with a muscle car ride and handling. He says it rides more like a Lexus...and really dislikes the car...passing it on to his wife. And this from a guy who owns a classic car shop! (Why he bought it in the first place is beyond me)

Just out of curiosity, what exactly allowed you to tell various 4th Gen Camaro's apart? The only visual difference besides the SS's hoodscoop were the badges, rims and exhaust and all of those were rather subtle and you had to really look to be sure. The 2010's are even more subtle in that way, but pretty much the same thing...badges, rims and exhaust. I'm just saying that it seems a little nitpicky.

The only good news on the weight front is that the 2015 redesign will use the new Alpha RWD platform that is also going to underpin the new Cadillac ATS and the next CTS. Alpha is a blend of Kappa (Pontiac Solstice/Satrun Sky) and Zeta (Pontiac G8/Camaro). Zeta is rumored to be moving to "Premium Zeta" and underpinning the proposed Buick/Cadillac flagship, leaving Alpha for all smaller/regular cars.
The good news with Alpha is that it weighs a lot less than Zeta as it was designed to make the Cadillac ATS equal the weight of the BMW 3-series. In Camaro guise they are expecting a curb weight of 3,500 - 3,600 pounds. If it becomes a reality, the Camaro and Mustang will be equal in acceleration, but the Camaro will be the superior handling car thanks to the advanced IRS setup.
