A mere 250 HP in a near 3600lb car, sounds optimistic at best. And to get those HP numbers, you need to run premium gas. It'll be a fun ride, no doubt, but there's a lot of fluff in the introductory propaganda.

And yet it's considered a compact sedan. My "midsize sedan", 2003 Malibu with a 3.1L V6, 170 HP, 190 torque, 4 speed auto; weighs 3,100.
My 276HP 3400lb Sonata Turbo takes good o'l regular gasoline, so premium isn't required if it they build it that way. Hopefully they can get close to the 23/34MPG my Sonata is EPA rated at. I believe the Regal Turbo is currently at 18/29. Definitely love seeing more turbo 4 bangers. Now give us more AWD options!
Where are you guys getting 3,600 pounds from? The Verano clocks in around 3,300. The Regal, which is the larger midsize car is the one that weighs around 3,600. Also, the MPG is as much a product of gearing as it is anything else. The Sonata for instance is geared for MPG. Even with 274hp it's 0-60 times are only in the 6.5 second range. The heavier and less powerful Regal GS beats a Sonata in a drag race. The Verano will as well with its sub-6 second 0-60 time. However, both of those cars get worse MPG, a product of their more aggressive gearing. That's not a knock on the Sonata, just placing its numbers into perspective; horsepower and weight are only part of the equation.
For an out there example, it's also why the new Audi A4 2.0T with 50+ less horsepower then a Sonata, but sporting an 8-speed transmission, smokes a Sonata as well as either of these Buicks in a drag race, despite weighing more and having AWD while getting the same MPG as the lighter, FWD Buicks.
Overall, I like the Verano. It's offering a lot at that price point compared to the base Lexus and Acura comeptition. For the price of a Malibu LT, you can get a very well appointed Verano that would actually be fun to drive and have a much more premium feel. Based on how well the current Buick models are selling, I think people are liking the idea of a little more premium for a lot less money.
GM spec sheet says it weighs 3550lbs US, empty of all fluids. Add gas, oil transmission fluid and the other liquids and yer over 3600lbs. Of course, this is assuming GM has a clue.
