Have an 03 Yukon. Have 160k miles on it. No major repairs to date. Know the engine will go a long time, but think the tranny is probably nearing the end. A/C too.
Have a buddy at a dealership that took in an 08 Tahoe LTZ on trade. Loaded. Everything but 4x4, which is fine with me. Has 75k miles on it, but VERY clean. Can let me have it for $28,500.
Thoughts on pricing and miles on it? Is it a GREAT deal, or just a good buy? Or even that?
Is your Yukon paid for? A few grand invested in the transmission and A/C will keep it going for a long time versus the $30,000+ (after taxes, etc.) you'd be putting into that newer Tahoe.
You should be able to replace the transmission in your current vehicle for under $2000.
When you say the AC is "nearing the end," do you mean it doesn't blow as cold as it used to? Probably just needs a charge which should run around $50.
If you're happy with your current vehicle and it's in good shape other than these two impending problems, it makes much more sense to keep it than to pay $28K for a different vehicle only to find yourself in this same position 5 years down the road.
If you're ready for something different, though, that's another matter entirely. There's nothing wrong with that, but don't try to rationalize it based on a couple of issues with the current vehicle because usually it can't be done. Just make the decision to get something new and do it.
I agree with those who think the vehicle you're considering is over priced, though. If you decide to get something new keep shopping around.

Your math skills need a lot of work.
How can a transmission replacement and A/C repair cost more than the '08 Tahoe? With the '08 Tahoe EVERYTHING from purchase price & interest rate, depreciation to insurance will cost you way more than you dependable '03 Tahoe. Hell, for $38,000 you can put 2 or 3 engines/trans in your '03 and have lots of money left over!!
Dude, what the hell is wrong with you? Any 5th grader can see the numbers just don't line up in your favor!
A 5 year old tahoe with 75 k for 28,500... If you found out how much they really have in the car (you NEVER will) you would know you are being ripped.... If it had 20 or 30 k maybe but not 75 k...no way
Nope, its NOT a good deal. Way too much for that many miles. Can see it being that price if it had maybe 50 miles on it and just rolled off the truck, but not in this case.
Spend that money towards your current ride to make the needed repairs and save all that expense. Plus you won't have to deal with the payments.
