I have a 97 gmc sierra automatic 4x4 do I put the truck in park to engage 4x4 or can it be done in neutral or does it matter

Ill assume you mean automatic 4X4, not automatic, 4X4. it should be in neutral.

My 4WD is a button on the dash. Can press button any time. Except for 4WD LOW. That track has to be stopped. I think. As I never use 4WD low.

Stopped, transmission in neutral or park. I prefer neutral when shifting into low range.
