Looking for a work truck for my side business, meaning it won't be used daily, and fuel mileage isn't a huge concern.
I already have a 2016 F-150 with the 3.5L Ecoboost, and this truck will only be used for the heavier towing jobs and stuff I don't want to use the F-150 for.
I know this engine has been used in RVs, box vans, medium-duty trucks, and widely in marine applications. Am I wrong in assuming this engine will last me a long while with proper preventive maintenance?
The truck I'm looking at is an '01, and has the 5-speed Allison automatic.
The 8.1s can have main seal issues, but it's not a huge issue. They are pretty stout engines overall. The first couple years of them had a recall on the crank position sensor, but that's a non-issue at this point in time. I have the 8.1 in my Suburban (with the 4L80E transmission) and at 130K+ miles it is a stout engine pulling my 9400 lb travel trailer all over the east coast easily.
