For all the pining you two are doing for the old 500ci V8, Cadillac gets more net power these days out of a 217ci V6. You are never going to see a 455 or a 500ci engine in a Cadillac again because it's just not necessary. Get over it.

One of the mechanics told me it was a gutless wonder; just not enough torque to haul that much weight around.

You know, it seems that ever since GM started the downsizing in 1977, they have been going down hill. I think there's a connection. GM was know for their big car lineup. Now all this talk of hybrids and electric cars just doesn't do anything for me. Bring back the 454s, 455s and the 500s. I'll be the first to line up to buy.
I know if I bought a Cadillac every year and saw the '77 lineup, I would have been disappointed. I probably would have just kept a '76 instead of trading it in.

As long as there are classic Cadillacs available to buy (with BIG engines) I can't complain.

The new ones have the power, but the big 454, 455, 460, 472 and 500s have plenty of torque; in some cases a lot more than the new engines.

Torque schmorque. A modern CTS-V Caddy would make an old 500ci Caddy feel as slow as a Hummer H1. I wont even mention the handling and/or braking. lol

The CTS-V being introduced for '09 has a supercharged 427 ci V-8. I don't think that's the best example, though the V-6 in the regular CTS is plenty to haul it around.

Not quite. Try 378ci. Still good for nearly 650 net horsepower and could probably run the 1/4 faster while towing a '76 Cadillac behind it than the '76 could do by itself with its 500ci engine.

Not to mention that it handles better than any old Caddy could ever dream of. Driving an old Caddy felt like sitting on top of an over inflated medicine ball.

Yeah but you forget that some people like that "floaty" feel. How anyone could ever "like" having no idea what the hell is happening on the road beneath them, I'll never know.

I won't disagree that there are some things to like about the new cars, but there's also advantages with old technology. I like being able to lift the hood on a car and be able to know what every part does and be able to make repairs myself without a thousand dollar dealer service department bill. And to have a car with no computers - awesome.

While there are things to like about new cars, if I had to choose between a 1976 Cadillac and a 2009 Cadillac, the 76 would win hands down. I like the old style way of making horsepower - through cubic inches. The bigger the better. Besides, you could take a 500 cubic inch motor and hot rod it to easily get 400-500 horsepower reliably. I'm a drag racer so I value straight line acceleration over handling anyway. The idea of a V6 engine in a Cadillac is laughable for someone like me.

When I look at the construction and materials used on the big GM cars of that era, I'm much more impressed. Thick full perimeter frames, heavy weight engines and chrome bumpers, rear wheel drive and rugged transmissions. Heavily made door panels and enormous room in the interior and trunks. Dashboards that don't look like they were made in Japan or the product of a computer. You had car guys designing cars, not focus groups.

In a large luxury car, I like the soft suspension and a boulevard ride. If I want a good handling car, I take out my TA or Vette. No car ever made performs equally good at everything.

I agree that era will never return, but as long as some of these cars are still out there and you have memories of a better and simpler time, the dream still lives.

A CTS-V Caddy could never do what traditional Caddys were made for... seat 6 people and their luggage for a 2-week cross-country trip, acres of room on the inside (63" of shoulder room), soft & comfortable seats and a nice, smooth ride. Oh, and BIG!
