The Imperial had a "check gauges" warning lamp... one of the industries first I believe. It illuminated I guess when fuel went low, temperature went high, oil pressure low, etc. Also in either 59 and or 60 they (Imperial) had the soft glow instrument cluster lights. Its in the ad, but I have never seen one illuminated personally.
The Imperial instrument illumination you refer to was called Panelescent or Electoluminescent; it was developed by Sylvania and was used on all 1960 - 63 Imperials. It was also used on full-sized Chryslers through 1962 and the 1966 and 67 Dodge Chargers. I have a 1960 and 62 Imperial and can attest to the beauty of this technology, which was later reintroduced with the introduction of the Lexus flagship LS400. These instrument panels glow!

oh yes, thats what it said it was! I used to own a 1990 and 1991 Lexus LS400 with these and they were really nice. I never knew they debuted in the early 60s... wonder why they stopped using them? I have never seem them in person before on the early Mopars... would love to see a pic of them glowing.... sounds really cool!

Do you have any pics or videos of these panels in action?
I am more of a 4-door guy though (crazy I know, LOL), but here is a '65 Bonneville 4dr (lower car in pic) and this wasnt even the fanciest one in '65. They also made a Bonneville Brougham, but the pic of that one was not that great.
the interiors could be nearly as luxurious....
ONE of my favorites for '65 is the Caprice Custom 4dr hardtop. Caprice was an option package on the '65 Impala 4dr hardtop before becoming its own model line in '66... check out this '65 Caprice! Very luxurious!

My 65 Crown in catolog featured black, is still a dream on the road. Very quiet, lots of power, handles well for its size, claro walnut dash still in great shape, etc. Cadillacs were great, and if you were a member of the country club, ofcourse you had to own one----GEE WHIZ M peer pressure. Imps always a little different, usually more expensive, and if you owned one to go drag racing at stop lights, you were quickly kicked out of Imps anywhoo, cuz you didn't quite get the point. AH Yes, incomparable were the ads.
