were the 73-77 Chev Monte Carlos basically stretched gimmicky Chevelles, or were they like hybrids of Chevelles and Impalas? Like the Barracuda/Challengers were hybrids of Valiant/Dart/Satellite/Coronet parts, same thing?

I remember the Chevelle Laguna with those rotating seats was like a Monte Carlo, and the Gran Torino Elite was like a T Bird, without having to fork over the extra $$$

or maybe i'm wrong?

Yeah, the early cars were a rebody of the Chevelle, although they *looked* bigger to me at the time. If memory serves it got downsized along with many other cars in 1977.

A cousin had an SS 454 1971 model, a pretty cool car. He said something like 900 of these were built, I don't know where he got that figure, but I have not seen another SS454 Monte ever. Not that I have been out there beating the bushes to find one.

I've had both. Even though the Chevelle weighed 500 lbs more, it definately hugged the road better and was faster on take-off. The Monte was a boat. Nice cruiser, but side-by-side, the Monte saw nothing but taillights.

I had 77 Monte , it was one of the best cars I had, It was a good cruiser on the innerstate, I wish I still had this car, I thought it had good lines and was a well built car.

Default yeah

the monte was downsized in the fall of 77 for the 78 model year; the big chevs and other full sized GM's were downsized for the 77 model year; the nova became the radically changed Citation in mid 79

Yeah, it was really nothing more than a dressed-up Chevelle Malibu. Here are some photos for comparison. Note, even the front windshields are the same...

here are your "swivel" seats.....

I like the concept of the seats (1959 Dodge had them as well), but I have never liked one-piece "high-back" bucket seats.

When I was a kid our neighbors had a '77 Monte Carlo Landau, it was banana yellow w/ black vinyl top and black vinyl interior. It also had the rally type wheels like you'd see on a '68 Camaro.

Me and the neighbors kid took it for a spin one night, we were 13 years old and could barely see over that looooong hood. .

I know... one of my first cars was a 1977 Monte Carlo Landau... that was in the early 1990s. It was light blue, light blue interior and white vinyl top. It was nice, but in the early 90s, these were not desirable cars. I think I sold it for like $400.

1977 was the last year for the big body MC...

you can see how much smaller it became for 1978-1979..... (and this body style lasted until 1988!)

and naturally, the Malibu was also downsized...

Monte Carlo I believe was the answer to Ford's T Bird. GM wanted to make a "personal luxury coupe" type car. So they took the Chevelle and pretty much face lifted it. Monte Carlo uses many of the same parts the Chevelle used, but Monte always had it's own sheet metal, and a few interior and underhood pieces.

And yes I believe the Ford Elite was also to have been a luxury coupe. I believe they took the Torino and facelifted it as well.

Monte's were lightened and shortened for the 1978 model year. It was also the first year you could get a V6 in a Monte and the largest engine then in 78 for Monte was a 305. Before that the 350 was the base engine for the Monte, followed by the 402 which was replaced in 73 with a 454 that ran until the 75 model year. A 400 small block was introduced on Monte in 73 I believe and last year was 76.
