Are you aware of the population and geographical differences between those two nations?

Population and geographical differences are irrelevant when we're talking about percentages. 4% of Japanese car sales consists of foreign makes. The Chinese number is 33%. GM alone is 15% of Chinese car sales (~ 1.9m units in 2009). Note that the foreign component of Japanese car sales (at 4%) is actually an increase from the immediate post-war era when Japanese cars had a reputation for being unreliable rust buckets. In other words, when Japanese cars were junk, the Japanese were even more inclined to buy them than they are today.

The bottom line? The Japanese, much like Europeans (and Koreans), are a lot more inclined towards a traditional blood-and-soil nationalism, than either Americans or Chinese.

if i buy a European car its not going to be a Buick. its nice that GM has bought up brands it can pillage, and its nice they add some good stuff of their own to it. but this isn't a Buick, and Buick won't be saved by it if it shows up as a Chevy and/or a Caddy, also

maybe they'll cut off two doors and call it a Corvette

Opel's been a part of GM for about 80 years.

Yes they are irrelevant, thats why I commented on the following comment which is initially misleading.

It is a good thing that GM is relying on Opel...

Opel brings engineering assets to the table that GM has not been able to master in a certain segment of the product line.
