It's pretty much typical suburbia with mostly subdivisions and a few strip malls. Retail is about one-third chains and two-thirds independent businesses. There are a lot of activities for families and the schools are very highly rated. Homes range from $300k for a smaller, older home to $1 million for new construction. It doesn't really have a downtown area but it does have a Metra station. It's also fairly ethnically diverse - there are large numbers of Jews, Asians, and Russian immigrants, and a small amount of Hispanics and African-Americans.

I live there currently and is typical suburbia. If you get a house north of Lake Cook Rd you are in Stephenson school district if that matters to you.
