Hi,
I wanted to know what the good people of Des Plaines are saying about the upcoming opening of the casino this summer. Are people happy about it? Are people upset? Please give as much insight as possible.

Thank you for your time!

I'm not happy about the location. It should have gone to Rosemont.

Default Rivers Casino set to open in Des Plaines in July

Illinois will get its first land based casino when Rivers Casino opens in Des Plaines next month.

I have to wonder what effect this will have on the Fox River riverboat casinos, the Indiana lakeshore casinos in the Calumet Region, and Pottawatomi in Milwaukee. Seems like they have to take a big hit.

Of course, when Illinois gets its second land based casino (which is bound to be huge in size) somewhere around downtown Chicago, the bets are literally off on what will happen to the outlying competition in those three locations mentioned above.

It is even convenient to O'Hare. I wonder how many passengers with a long layover will try their luck?

I've said this before. Vistors flock to Chicago by the thousands every year. They do not flock to Chicago to go anywhere else to shop or gamble or dine or for entertainment. There has always been gaming all over the state from Chicago to St. Louis. Visitors to Chicago did not flock downstate to gamble or to shop. The exception might have been when Capone had a number of gambling boats on the river.

I didn't like the idea of the casino when it was proposed, I hate it now that it's almost done.

It means I won't be driving to Hammond or Milwaukee.

Rivers casino license used to be held by a riverboat that closed down. If the gambling expansion bill passes, Rivers could shut down in a few years.

I would imagine that at least a portion of the Rivers Casino's business will be people from the city that would not have otherwise gone gambling. Aurora, Joliet, Elgnin, Hammond are all a pretty lengthy trip from downtown Chicago and the wealthy north and northwest side neighborhoods. Rivers is advertising it's accessibility from the blue line. If a group of people from CHI wanted to go gamble and not have to get a DD (wanted to drink), right now their options are to go to Aurora or Joliet and try to work around the METRA schedule, or take one of the many Horshoe casino buses. The blue line runs 24/7, allowing that same group to go to Rivers without thinking ahead to any schedules, etc.

I'd say that if any casino were to loose out significantly, it would be the Grand Victoria in Elgin, given it's position close to I-90. They would have to compete for some of the NW suburban crowd.

My guess, gambling in Illinois will increase overall. The Rivers Casino, with it's easy access to many areas of wealth will probably have stakes that are generally higher than the other casinos in the area, but the competition will put some downward pressure on gambling stakes at Grand Victoria in Elgin and (to a lesser extent) Hollywood in Aurora and Horshoe in Hammond. However, they will still come out generally fine.
