This post struck me as very odd. If your from California where are you hearing that des plaines is racist?

I'm not an expert on des plaines but I think its relatively diverse as far as suburbs go, I think there's a lot of indians and asians, probably not a huge number of latinos or balcks but much more diverse than some other burbs I think.

I woudln't consider the burb of Plainfield to be especially racist but I kind of remember hearing at one time it was a big kkk place. I can see maybe hearing something like that but never heard anything about des plaines at all.

I didn't say all of Cook County. I said NW burbs of Cook County, i.e. the 24 or 25 suburbs northwest of O'Hare. In those burbs, there are approx. 600,000 people. Based on current demographic trends, the 2010 census will confirm, those suburbs all combined will be approx. 40% Hispanic.

The Tribune recently had a story on Rolling Meadows about how the Hispanic population was around 20% in 2000, and most expect that to double at a minimum by the release of this census. Wheeling is now over 50% Hispanic, same with Hanover Park and Streamwood. That is just a sampling.

The point is that the NW burbs are pretty diverse. There is a large Hispanic population around Des Plaines so the OP will not feel out of sorts, especially with her spouse being Hispanic. I would hardly classify the NW burbs are generic white. Plenty of Polish, Jewish, Asian, and Italian in the NW burbs as well as Hispanic.

Cook County was 20% Hispanic in 2000. Lake County was 15% Hispanic in 2000. Many individuals with undocumented status were not counted in the 2000 census, but provisions were made to attempt to count them for this 2010 census. While many European immigrants are undocumented, the largest group are undocumented Mexican immigrants. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that the Hispanic populations of Cook and Lake County was probably higher in 2000. In the last 10 years, the Hispanic population in Cook and Lake has grown exponentially in addition to underreporting.

Not sure if you are still looking for info on your initial post, but i was born and raised in Des Plaines, IL. I am Mexican and i have never had a problem in my own town. The town itself is very diverse, with many east asians (indians) asians (filipinos, chinese, koreans, japanese, etc) blacks (african americans and individuals from africa, jamaica, etc) many hispanics/latinos, and europeans (huge polish population, some greeks here and there, italians) Des Plaines borders niles, morton grove, and park ridge. 90% of park ridge is white but i never have had a problem there, but i dont hang out there often, nor have i been pulled over. The farther away from the city, the less tolerant the neighborhoods becomes. PALATINE IS THE WORST and even if you are a tan white person I would recommend never stepping foot in that town. Family members of mine have been harassed by police and even beaten up there. I've never had a problem in Mt Prospect, but i'm sure there are many others who can counter that.

Interesting about Palatine. Palatine's 70,000 people speak over 100 different languages. Hispanics were 15% of the population in 2000 in Palatine, my guess is it is closer to 25% now.

Des Plaines has a large Mexican population. I don't think it will be a problem.
