Although the snow doesn't fall constantly, it's constantly melting and we use salt to keep ice from forming on the sidewalk - that is more of an issue than snow really in winter.

My advice would be save your nicest shoes for your meetings - put them on as you get out of your car and take them off (and brush off any salt immediately) as soon as you get back to your car. Watch where you are treading and just basically try to keep them dry and salt free as much as you can.

Once you've been to a few meetings you can gauge for yourself what the acceptable footwear is in your situation from what you are seeing your colleagues wearing. I wouldn't rule out buying a somewhat cheaper but still decent looking pair of shoes for winter.

Maybe for a few years since you have been here, but for most years this is not the case.

Good point. Maybe I can find a small brush to keep in my pea coat. I'll use it to wipe off my shoes. Still thinking of the rubber covers and just put them in my coat pocket. I'll be wearing boots if I have to walk through snow drifts, but I understand the whole ice thing. I actually grew up in Chicago. Of course, I was younger with no brains....walking around with a leather jacket,l eather shoe boots and no hat. Wow, I remember my ears and feet being so cold. Ha Ha. Now I realize the meaning of getting older and wiser.

Snowfall - Average Total In Inches
We always get one bigger storm per year... Usually in January or early February which adds to the total a lot, and since that average is taken from O'Hare it's pretty skewed as to what areas in the south burbs and inner city get. The west, northwest, and northern burbs always get slammed, while areas in the city limits and south of the city get barely anything. So take one 12 inch snow and 5 other 3 inchers plus all the piddly amounts we get here all the time from Dec. - April and there's your 38.5 inches. 38.5 inches still is not a lot and that number would be sharply lower if it were taken from lets say Joliet or Matteson vs. Rosemont.
