I don't know if a residency requirement applies with all public school districts in the state, but I'd pretty sure it does since the towns around me do including mine. I live in Elmwood Park, lived here my whole life (17 years) and the residency requirement has been around the whole time from what I believe, but not really enforced until a couple years ago when the schools were overcrowding. They suspected a lot of kids were attending the schools in the district when they shouldn't be by using a fake address, so when you register your kids they make you give 3 different types of evidence that you live at the address you claim to live at (DL, utility bill, tax bill, etc). About a year after the new enforcement is when the illegal immigrant enrollment story made the news (ask if you don't know about it) which made fire for the school but they still do the proof of residency. If it's a public school, call and ask if they have a residency requirement, if they do I wouldn't risk trying to use a fake address.
