Illinois is not as flat as you think once you get off the interstate highways. You can find farmland divided by rolling hills, winding roads and valleys, forested areas, tree covered bluffs, big rivers, lakes, stata parks, the largest inland Wetlands in America and you can sleep with the wolves.

As to the Chicago burbs, I always liked Oak Park for a couple of reasons. It is racially diverse and it has the largest collection of Frank lloyd Wrignt buildings in the world. If you like mature trees, green lawns, convenient transportation and not too far from the Loop, it is a good location.

If you want to get away from the "flat as a pancake" terrain you pretty much need to get to the Fox Valley. Crystal lake, Oakwood Hills. Don't be misled by names. This metro area has far too many places with "Hills" or "Heights" in their title that are still flat.
