I would never be concerned about school funding in Winnetka. Illinois's spending per pupil statewide is significantly above the national average, as is teacher pay. All of the groaning about public school cuts in the state is exaggerated. Money is not everything in education. Oak Park/River Forest and Evanston Twp. are the two top spending per pupil in the state and the districts no longer compete for top recognition.

Rlest8 is also correct. School referendums are almost never defeated in most affluent Chicago suburbs.
That said, 75% of the voters in Wilmette have no children in the district. The parents here are very concerned about the referendum not passing. If it does not, the proposed cuts are apocalyptic - average class size rises to 27, all language and music programs eliminated for K-8, etc. This is on top of significant cuts that already are being made in preparation for the referendum.

Actually, New trier had a defeated referendum just last year...and by a wide margin, it wasn't even close.

The updated handbook language from Winnetka 36 has left me with the impression that the going home for lunch culture is dying.

Quote:
"Parents may sign their children up on Infosnap for lunch one or more days per week.
Parents may also sign their children up to receive milk or juice. There is no fee to stay
for lunch but there is a fee to purchase milk or juice. Children bring lunch from home.
Parents have the option of purchasing daily lunches, in advance, through Marla’s
Lunch. More information about Marla’s Lunches can be found on our PTO website.
While most students stay most days, your child may also go home for lunch on a regular
or occasional basis. Please let his/her teacher know if your child will be going home on
a day that he/she usually has lunch at school."
