Any info on Worth??
I am hopefully planning to relocate to the Chicago area within the next couple of weeks. I have been searching for an apartment in areas like Elmhurst, Lakeview, Oak Park, Wrigleyville, etc. I have heard that these are great areas, but most of the apartment buildings dont seem to have any 1 bedrooms available until Sept., or the only thing available is in the $1200 - $1500 range. A friend of mine told me about an apartment that was available in an area called Worth. The rent is very cheap....about $675 a month. Does anyone have any info about this area? Are most of the apartments this cheap or am I going into a bad/unsafe section? Im kind of running out of time, so I was thinking of possibly taking the apt sight unseen as I need to find something soon. Any info would be greatly appreciated.....thank you.

Worth is located southwest of Chicago. It is not a bad area. In fact, the suburb is pretty good. You will be located near transportation near the Metra at the Worth station, plus Chicago Ridge Mall is right down the street and Moraine Valley Community College is near by. You are within a 15 minute drive to Chicago. I would say take a look, but overall the area is not bad. You will be fine in Worth.

Worth is an older town, much like Oak Lawn and Chicago Ridge are. It is very true that Worth is a burb to consider with the price range you are looking for. The area is prodominantly white with some Arabian people mixed in as well.
Overall a typical apartment that $675 will get you around Worth is a building that most likely will be a housing 6 apartments (6 flat) built sometime around 1960-1970, most likely it will be about 800-1000 square feet with one bathroom, off street parking, heat most likely included with baseboard radiant style heat and wall style air conditioners are the norm. In the basement there is usually coin operated laundry and a small storage locker for you storable items.
Other areas around Worth to consider when renting in a similar price range would be: Oak Lawn, Palos Hills, Hickory Hills, Palos Heights, Bridgeview, Oak Forest, Orland Park, Tinley Park, and Chicago Ridge. All those areas are still very safe, have Metra train service, and rent should be similar in price.

Just a little history on "the friendly village"
Worth is the oldest town in the region, predating Chicago and Blue Island even. Most of the chicago southland was in Worth Township with Worth, Illinois being the county seat.

"the friendly village"? Do they really call it that? Is it a gay section or something? No offense to anyone that is gay, Ive just heard of areas that were mostly gay referred to as "friendly".

Worth does not have a gay reputation. They do have a big (for a suburb) summer festival called Worth Days with bands and a carnival and all that.
Ditto NYRules suggestions for other towns to look around, I'd also throw in Blue Island as a longtime resident: its cleap, excellent public trans, 30 minutes from downtown Chicago, 5 minutes from some nightlife in Chicago's Beverly neighborhood. Very walkable and bikeable, urban, diverse.
