Smile Should I Move to Homewood,IL or stay in Alsip,IL.

I currently live in Alsip. I am undecided in regards to staying in the Alsip, Oaklawn,Crestwood,Evergreen and Some Blue Island area. I am considering moving to Homewood to raise my child. How is the school system in Homewood? Do think it is better than Alsip? Where can I search the web to compare different schools/ elementary???

Out of the towns you mentioned, I would say narrow your search to Alsip, Crestwood, Homewood, and Evergreen Park.

I am not sure on Blue Island schools, so I can't really say.

Default Highlights some of the frustration...

If you try to use the Illinois Interactive Report Card to get a sense of which of those towns have "better" schools you really don't get much help.

For starters Homewood schools are organized into "grade level centers" and kids cycle through every two years. Pretty tough to get a sense for where the trouble spots are in such a short time frame, while Alsip is served by the more traditionally organized elementary / middle schools.

My sense is that the increasing class size at Alsip D 126 is not a good thing, yet the more stable class size at Alsip-Oak Lawn 125 might be due to shifting demographics and folks moving away. Hard to see a clear "winner" in that matchup...

My recommendation is to find the town served by the best schools you can track down and then find the most affordable living circumstances in that town. Somehow I doubt that either town would rank well using such criteria. If you are dependent on public transit for your employment I am sure that every extra stop on CTA / Pace makes for a crummier day's trip, but in the big picture a higher quality of classmates /parents may help more than your ability to be closer to work. The research from efforts like Parental Involvement & Engagement In Public Schools | Project Appleseed and other organizations suggest that by seeking out districts with a high level of parental involvement outcomes are enhanced...

Not sure if you already made up your mind? I attended Homewood Schools and all of my children did as well. I love living here and enjoy the mix of small town with big town amenities. I highly recommend Homewood all the time!

I have been through all of the Homewood public schools from kindergarden to highschool. The Homewood schools up until 8th grade are fantastic and diverse but keep in mind the highschool isn't good and not safe so you may need to save some money for the private highschool of the area called Marion Highschool, where many families from Homewood send their kids too. The town itself though is very nice and a great place to live. Also, if you do decide to move to Homewood its important you choose a good neighborhood the best neighborhoods are around downtown Homewood, the area around the Ravisloe Country Club and the area near willow school. Try to avoid around Millennium school and the area near East Hazel Crest because these neighborhoods have a higher crime rate and aren't very safe.

HF isn't good or safe? Of all the crazy sh*t, I read on this forum, this possibly tops it. Where do you people come from? I have seriously NEVER heard this before in "real life". HF is a ritzy school that people get jealous about, if anything.

I wager that Marion is less safe then HF. Growing up in Park Forest and attending Rich East High school after the turn of the century, we always knew which school had all the cokeheads. And no, it wasn't HF or East.

If you think any neighorhood in Homewood is unsafe, I suggest moving to Iowa.

just wanted to bump this to ask if anyone knows why the Homewood business district is taking such a hit. Bogarts, area and 183rd and Dixie emptying out. I know the economy still sucks, but wow. Also, what businesses are needed around there? My sister has a small business there, and she's interested in some suggestions for a new business there. Thanks

I don't think it's taking a hit at all. This isn't Matteson. That empty storefront will be replaced with something else in no time.

"Home sweet Homewood" - Kinda wish I felt that homely about it, lol

For some businesses it just may be the economy. My wife and I went to Bogarts about 2 months ago and wasn't impressed. I know a lot of people used to rave about the place, so I'm assuming that the quality went down. But I don't think that's a reflection of downtown Homewood. I know that the storefront on 183rd st where the Hollywood video and Caribou Coffee used to be looks empty but some business will eventually move in.

I personally feel that downtown Homewood has came up a knotch with the opening of Grapes and Grain, which is a wine and craft beer store on Dixie and Ridge road. This place looks beautiful. I looks like something you might see in downtown Naperville or Evanston. IMO, it raises the profile and aesthetics of downtown Homewood and shows that the area isn't going down the tube. Haven't shopped there yet but I look forward to in the near future.
