Joliet and "cathedral area" (Naperville, Romeoville: crime, houses, neighborhood)

Hi, I found this cathedral Joliet neighborhood while searching for houses. Does anybody lives there?
Generally I heard that Joliet is not best place to live, we have 4 children and look for house that fit all of us. Cathedral area looks very beautiful and sounds like it can fit our budget that is between 170k-250k

I would like to hear responses from those who live there or know the area. Is it waste of time to search houses in Joliet? School district would be our priority.

That's an odd misspelling. It's pronounced JOE-liet not JEW-liet..

Not as odd as you might think. The town was, in fact, originally named Juliet with its companion city being Romeo, which is now Romeoville.

I can give you tons of info on Joliet; I went to community college at Joliet Junior College, and graduated from University of St. Francis (which happens to be in the Cathedral Area)

Here's the thing - Joliet has a LOT of history. It's one of those really cool historic towns that is very intersting to those who appreciate history. As far as this particular neighborhood in Joliet, it is one of (if not THE) most breathtaking in terms of architecture. You'll find tons of late nineteenth century Victorian homes in what is called the "historic upper bluff".

Now, the downside is that there is more propensity for crime to happen. Joliet is largely minority; if that makes you uncomfortable, don't consider it.

Also, the public schools suck badly for the most part. Joliet does have one magnet school (Forest Park elementary) which is amazing. Both high schools are terrible ( i student taught at Joliet West).

If you've got the cash to send your kids to Parochial schools, you'll be much, much better off. My fiancee and her two sisters went to St. Raymonds (the school in the Cathedral) for K-8, and then to Joliet Catholic HS.

When I spelled Juliet I probably thought at that time about my daughter whose name is Julia or Jew-lia for those who like to spell her name this way,lol.

thanks for your description. I drove the cathedral neighborhood today. I really love it. Downtown of Joliet looks beautiful too. We don't mind if there are minorities. However, the school district is our consideration as we have four children under the age of 3 years old.
I hope we'll make some good decisions about our moving somewhere in a near future.

Joliet 86-Students Today, Learners For Life

I just checked Forest Park I.E now and saw that their math scores are excellent (90% +) , but their reading scores absymal, probably due to non english speaking students. Like I said, the downside is that after 5th grade, you're on your own. I believe you'd draw into one of the middle schools on the east side, and then into Joliet Central H.S.

Is there any reason you chose the Cathedral area, or even Joliet, for that matter? Do either you or your spouse work in the area?

My husband's company is going to relocate to bolingbrook area, so we can look farther west. We think about Naperville too. I found joliet inexpensive and those beautiful houses that sounds affordable, at least at the first glance. I fell in love with old houses long time ago, when I had a chance to see a lot of them inside. however, I am realistic.
